Augusta dumps Dierks, serves notice
November 13, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

AUGUSTA - Regional pride helped spur Augusta (6-5 in 2A second round) to perhaps the biggest first-round upset, a 28-7 stunner over Dierks.

"A lot has been made about the 7-2A conference, but no one has been talking about our non-conference schedule," Augusta coach Reginald Murphy says. The Red Devils' first four non-conference opponents, Little Rock Christian, Carlisle, Hazen and Des Arc, are a combined 35-8, and all made the playoffs. All but Hazen and Des Arc are still alive, and LR Christian is ranked No. 2 in 5A by Hootens.com.

"We just came out there with a chip on our shoulder to prove that we play a pretty good brand of football. We weren't playing just for ourselves, but for our conference and other teams in this part of the state."

After Dierks scored on the game's opening drive, Augusta scored 28 unanswered points to come up with its first playoff victory since 2001, when the Red Devils went all the way to the championship game.

"They were overloading us to one side," Murphy says. "We made some adjustments to make them one-dimensional. They relied heavily on the pass. Our speed advantage allowed us to rush the passer and cover receivers with linebackers and defensive ends."

Augusta senior Sherrod Shockley (5-9, 185) and sophomore Matt Bowen (6-1, 175) stood out. Shockley led the Red Devils in rushing with 22 carries for 136 yards and a touchdown. Murphy says that put him over 1,000 yards for the season. He also made an interception. Bowen had two catches for about 65 yards and a TD and came up with a turnover of his own when he wrestled the ball away from Dierks quarterback Drew Walston and raced 30 yards for a score.

The Red Devils face a Johnson County Westside team that earned its first-ever playoff victory, 43-40 over Dermott. J.C. Westside runs a Spread offense similar to Dierks and will put Augusta's ability to defend all over the field to the test.

"I think our speed will make a difference in the ballgame. Their quarterback (Peanut Richardson) is pretty crafty with the football, spreading it around to different people. We'll have to key on him," Murphy says.

SEARCY - The Des Arc Eagles scored 6 first half touchdowns and rolled to a 47-0 victory over the Augusta Red Devils in the Hooten's Kickoff Classic at Harding University Thursday night.

Ronnie Roland scored the first two Eagle touchdowns on runs of 9 and 2 yards respectively. Brandon Alexander, who was 5 of 6 kicking extra points, missed his only PAT on Roland's second TD, making the score 13-0.

Ron Metcalf, Des Arc's wide receiver, scored on a reverse from 19 yards away with 42 seconds left in the opening quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 19-0.

Des Arc's final touchdown came with 5:52 left in the third quarter when Ronald Dunlap ran in a 67-yard touchdown.
