WYNNE - The Batesville Pioneers' 18-game winning streak and 20-game unbeaten streak came to an end Friday night, as the Wynne Yellowjackets defeated the Pioneers 35-21 to take over first place in the AAAA-East.

Batesville (6-1, 3-1) scored first on a 17-yard touchdown run from Tim Childress with 6:33 left in the opening quarter. Mason Reeves kicked the extra point to give the Pioneers their only lead, 7-0.

Wynne (5-2, 4-0) answered on a 20-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Terrance Boykin. Ryan Wood, 5 of 5 on extra points, kicked the score to a 7-7 tie.

The Yellowjackets controlled the ball for all but 1:37 of the second quarter. Terrance Garrett, another sophomore back, capped a 15-play, 88-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run with 5:30 left in the half.

After holding Batesville to a three-and-out possession, Wynne started another drive that consumed most of the remainder of the half. Batesville put together one more drive that used the remainder of the clock. Reynolds threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Addison Rayford with :53 left in the game to set the final score.

"This was the best we have played all year," said Wynne coach Don Campbell. "We played fantastic. I'm very pleased."

Williams carried the ball 26 times and gained 153 yards for the Yellowjackets.

Reynolds completed 11 of 22 passes for 132 yards for the Pioneers.

PARAGOULD - The defending Class AAAA state champion Batesville Pioneers extended their winning streak to 17 games, and their unbeaten streak to 19 games with a 14-7 AAAA East conference win over the Paragould Rams Friday night at Harmon Field.

Batesville (5-0, 2-0) started its opening drive on the 44 yard line and drove 56 yards in 15 plays. Senior running back Tim Childress capped the drive on a three yard touchdown run with 7:00 left in the first quarter. Mason Reeves kicked the PAT to make the score 7-0.

Childress scored again on the Pioneers' next possession. Childress sprinted 47 yards to the end zone with 3:48 left in the opening period. Reeves set what would be the halftime score at 14-0 with his extra point kick.

Paragould (2-3, 0-2) controlled the ball for all but six plays of the third quarter, but could not come up with any points. The Rams started the second half from the 33 yard line and drove all the way to the Batesville two yard line in 18 plays before turning the ball over on downs.

After holding the Pioneers to a three and out possession, Paragould took over again. The Rams drove as far as the Batesville 32 yard line before the Pioneers halted the drive with an interception.

Turnovers marred the fourth quarter as Batesville fumbled twice and threw an interception, while Paragould succumbed to a fumble and an interception.

The Rams got on the scoreboard with 12 seconds remaining in the game. Quarterback Chris Stidham threw a 74 yard touchdown pass to Seth Mitchell, and Shawn Brummett kicked the extra point to bring the Rams to within seven points. An onside kick attempt by Paragould failed.

Childress gained 137 yards on 24 carries for the Pioneers. Tyler Garmrath led the Paragould ground game with 68 yards on 18 carries.

The Pioneers' last loss came against Sylvan Hills on November 15, 2002, in the second round of the state playoffs.

BATESVILLE - After going down 12-0 to start the game, the Batesville Pioneers reeled off 29 unanswered points to defeat the Wynne Yellowjackets, 29-12, for the AAAA East Championship.

Wynne (8-2, 5-2) seemed to take control of the game early. Akeyon Reed returned the opening kickoff 89 yards to put the Yellowjackets up 6-0 with only 13 ticks gone from the clock.

Batesville's opening possesion eneded when Wynne safety Brian Johnson intercepted a Batesville pass at the Yellowjacket 35 yard line. Nine plays and 65 yards later, Courtney Williams capped the drive with a 20 yard touchdown run to score what would be Wynne's final points of the ball game.

The Pioneers (9-0-1, 7-0) got on the scoreboard with 3:39 left in the opening stanza. Antonio McCoy sprinted 53 yards for Batesville's first touchdown. Scott Wickliffe, a perfect three of three on the night, kicked the extra point to make it 12-7.

Batesville's next drive took almost the entire second quarter. Quarterback Kyle Francis called his own number on a one yard sneak to finish up a methodical 14 play, 82 yard drive with 3:31 left before intermission. Francis passed to Jarrett Ramey for the two point conversion to give the Pioneers the lead for good, 15-12.

Tim Childress scored two touchdowns for the Pioneers in the third quarter on runs of 5 and 12 yards respectively to set the final score.

"I'm just so proud of these seniors," said Batesville coach Dave King. "They've showed great leadership all year.

"It didn't look too good there in the first quarter, but our senior leadership pulled us through."

McCoy led Batesville's 250 yard ground attack with 129 yards on 21 carries. Francis completed 8 of 13 passes for 82 yards to round out the Pioneers' 332 yards of total offense.

McCoy runs Batesville by Paragould
October 26, 2002

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

PARAGOULD — Batesville tailback Antonio McCoy rushed for three touchdowns to help his Pioneers to a 41-14 victory over the Paragould Rams.

“It’s the greatest feeling in the world,” McCoy said. “I’ve never scored three in one game before. I owe it all to the offensive line.”

Center Josh Gamel (6-5, 349) and guard Ben Dobbs (6-5, 307) created enough holes for McCoy to gain 127 yards on 12 carries.

Batesville (5-3, 3-2 AAAA-East) scored on its first play from scrimmage when Kyle Francis found Cornelius Strickland on a 63-yard pass for a touchdown.

Paragould (2-6, 1-4 AAAA-East) looked to make a game of it early. The Rams marched 70 yards in seven plays on their first possession. Seth Mitchell capped the drive on a 1-yard run to tie the score, 7-7.

Batesville came right back at the Rams on its next drive. With 5:17 left in the opening quarter, Tim Childress finished a 65-yard drive on the seventh play with a 4-yard touchdown run. The Pioneers took the lead for good, 14-7.

McCoy took over from there for the Pioneers. He scored two of his three TDs in the second quarter on runs of 29 and 18 yards. Batesville led 28-7 at halftime.

McCoy picked up where he left off in the third quarter. With 10:54 left in the third quarter, McCoy ran in his third touchdown from 2 yards.

Childress got back into the act late in the third period when he scored on another 1-yard touchdown to make it 41-7.

Paragould got its final points with 9:02 left in the game. Aaron Sowards scored on a 1-yard run to set the final score at 41-14.

“I thought we looked very good offensively,” said Batesville coach Dave King. “They (Paragould) were driving us the first couple of series, but after that our defense looked really good too. It was just an outstanding effort.”

Francis put up some good numbers for Batesville, completing 11-of-17 passes for 202 yards and the first Pioneer touchdown.

This was an important game for both teams to stay alive in the playoff hunt.

“We’d like to think we are still in it,” said Paragould coach Brian Carter. “Winning our last two games might get us in there.”

“They were just an explosive team,” Carter said of the Pioneers. “They ran the ball well, threw the ball well. They are a really good football team.”

Batesville thumps Greene County Tech
October 12, 2002

By David Grim

PARAGOULD — There was another homecoming in Greene County this week. This time it was Greene County Tech’s, but the result was similar to last week’s Paragould homecoming.

The Batesville Pioneers came to town and beat up on the Eagles, 41-7 Friday night.
Batesville got two touchdowns by air in the first quarter. Kyle Francis found John Baker from 16 yards away for the Pioneers’ first touchdown with 5:45 left in the opening period.
Batesville defensive back Weldon Davis picked off an Eagle pass at his own 41 to set up the Pioneers’ next score. Francis struck on the next play with a 59-yard touchdown pass to Cornellius Strickland to make it 14-0.

Batesville’s running backs would handle the scoring the rest of the night. Tim Childress ran one in from 27 yards out early in the second quarter to make it 21-0.

Greene County Tech got its only points with 2:32 left in the half. Kyle Vassar plunged in from 2 yards away to bring the Eagles to within 14 points.

With time running out on the half, Antonio McCoy scored from 6 yards to make the Pioneers’ halftime lead 28-7.

The last two touchdowns both came in the third quarter. McCoy sprinted 51 yards for one and Childress ran 5 yards for the other.

“That team is extraordinarily well coached,” said GCT head coach Pip Runyan. “We knew we were going to have a hard time with this team. They are the most difficult team we have had to prepare for all year.”

“Batesville is a football town,” Runyan continued. “They have a big-time program that has the support of the community. Teams like that are always tough.”

“I thought we executed well offensively,” said Batesville head coach Dave King. “I thought our defense lost a little intensity towards the end of the first half, but we seemed to get it back in the second half.”

“We have some good weapons offensively,” King continued, “and we are just getting them back healthy again. Kyle (Francis) did a great job running the offense.”

Francis completed 10 of 12 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team to victory. McCoy and Childress combined for 243 yards. McCoy picked up 161 on 15 carries and Childress ran for 82 on eight carries. Both backs scored two touchdowns each.
Vassar led the Eagles’ effort with 72 yards on 12 carries. Justin Hart added 59 yards on 10 carries for Greene County Tech.

Batesville improves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in AAAA East conference play. The Pioneers will host conference rival Beebe (5-1, 2-1) next week.
Greene County Tech (2-4, 0-3) travels to Nettleton (0-6, 0-3) for its next game.
