Blytheville clinches 5A
East By David Grim PARAGOULD - The Blytheville Chickasaws clinched the top seed in the playoffs from the 5A East with a 41-8 win over the Paragould Rams Friday night. Blytheville (9-0, 6-0) began the scoring when quarterback Gabriel Osagie snuck in from a yard out. After a successful extra point, the score was 7-0 with 8:18 remaining in the first quarter. Josh Woodruff scored the Chicks' next touchdown with 2:59 left in the first quarter. Woodruff ran in from 3 yards away to make it 14-0. Blytheville recovered an onside kick and scored two plays later on a 30-yard run from Oscar Woods. The Chicks led 21-0 with 2:30 in the first period. Blytheville's defense got in on the scoring when Gerrett Howard returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown with 8:24 left in the half. The extra point failed, and the score was 27-0. The Chicks ensured that the mercy clock would run in the second half when Osagie hit Woodruff on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:47 remaining in the half. Howard ran in for two points to make it 35-0. Don Jackson added one more touchdown for Blytheville early in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run. Tyson Underwood got Paragould (3-6, 2-4) on the scoreboard with 2:49 left in the game. Underwood sprinted in from 41 yards out, and Steven Vericker added a two-point conversion to set the final score. Jarvis Jones was the leading rusher for the Chickasaws with 69 yards on just 4 carries. |

Blytheville 8 and oh! By David Wallace BLYTHEVILLE - The Blytheville Chickasaws are 8-0 for the first time in the Coach Doug Quinn era. The Chickasaws went 10-0 in 1973, winning the AAA East conference before losing in the first round of the AAA playoffs to Texarkana. The Almanac of Arkansas High School Football records only one other season since 1960 when the Chicks won all their non-conference games and at least eight on the year. The exception was 1998 when their first loss came in the 7th game, 35-34 to Forrest City. The 1994 Chickasaws won 10 straight but were 7-1 at this point after losing their opening game. Blytheville had to dig deep to earn its eighth win. Led by senior quarterback Gabriel Osagie (6-3, 175), the Chicks drove 66 yards in nine plays to score with 39 seconds left. Osagie's pass to senior tight end Ojay Cullens (6-4, 195) for the two-point conversion provided the difference in a dramatic 22-21 win over Batesville, the Pioneers' first conference loss. "He put it low where only Ojay could get it," Coach Quinn says. "There was no way he was going to get it intercepted." The drive came after Batesville had turned away the Blytheville offense at the Pioneer 5-yard line. Quinn says his team could have given up at that point but didn't. "During a timeout with 2:40 left (with the Chicks down 21-14), I went out there, and some of the seniors said, 'Coach, we are NOT going to lose,'" Quinn says. Quinn says he got a sign before the year began of how much resolve his team had. The Chickasaws came back from 10 points down to Jonesboro in a preseason scrimmage. He says they've gained confidence as the season progressed. Quinn says junior receiver George Merriweather (6-1, 165) made a "big time catch" on the final drive with the game on the line. |

Beebe vs. Blytheville big in 5A
East By David Wallace BEEBE - John Shannon still doesn't know what it's like to lose as a head coach, and Beebe (6-0, 3-0 in 5A East) hasn't seen anything like it in 21 years. The Badgers are unbeaten in the former Cabot assistant's debut season, and 6-0 for the first time since 1986. They finished 9-1, 5-1 in the 5AA-South that year, and lost to conference champion Pulaski Robinson in the playoffs 21-6. Beebe's battle for the conference championship with unbeaten Blytheville week 7 is bigger than any game anyone can remember at Bro Irwin Stadium. It's homecoming, and Athletic Director Jerry Jordan estimates an overflow crowd of 4,000 to 5,000. They won't all be Badger boosters. Jordan says Blytheville is sending seven buses to support the Chickasaws. Until this year, Blytheville had gone 6-0 only one year since 1973. In 1998, the Chicks lost their first game 35-34 to Forest City week 7. |

Chickasaws rack up return yards,
TD's By David Wallace BLYTHEVILLE - Kickoff returns for touchdowns helped fuel Blytheville's 4-0 start. Junior Jarvis Jones (5-9, 168) took a fourth-quarter kickoff 77 yards in the Chickasaws' 18-6 win over Wynne week 4. The previous week, Jones ran the opening kickoff from Cape Girardeau Central, MO, back 95 yards for a touchdown. Senior Gerrett Howard (6-2, 175) was named the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Player of the Week for his performance in a 34-26 win week 2 against Poplar Bluff, MO, when he returned kicks 79 and 76 yards for scores, his only two returns of the year. Jones' averages 45 yards in five returns this season, and junior Darnell Humphrey (5-11, 159) has returned one kick for 23 yards. Coach Doug Quinn says he looks for guys who are aggressive and can run to put on special teams. And he says Jones and Howard both know how to return kicks. "You've got to have courage," Quinn says. "You've got to be willing to stick it up into the wedge and find a seam." Quinn says he has enough depth to spread the glory around. Twelve different players have run the ball, eight have caught passes and 11 have scored. The talent spreads throughout the high school classes. In the three years prior to 2007, the junior high team went 24-4-1. All-state fullback Melvin Brooks (5-9, 176) is almost fully recovered from the stress fracture in his foot he sustained in spring practice. The senior (1,400 yards last season) has been gearing up slowly after returning to the team prior to the Poplar Bluff game week 2. Reprinted by permission. |
