State playoff notes
November 6, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - A streak continues, history is made, and droughts end as the brackets are set for the 2007 high school football state playoffs.

The longest continuing playoff streak belongs to Newport (10-0, 7-0, 1st seed in 2-4A). The Greyhounds are going to the postseason for the 21st consecutive time.

Springdale Har-Ber (8-2, 6-1, 1st seed in 7A West), Valley View (7-3, 4-3, 4th seed in 3-4A) and Cave City (6-4, 3-4, 5th seed in 2-3A) are making their first playoff appearances in their second year of varsity football.

Centerpoint (5-5, 4-3, 4th seed in 7-3A) will make the first playoff trip in the school's 11-year history. Centerpoint resulted from the consolidation of Glenwood and Amity (a non-football playing school). Glenwood made the playoffs three times in 40 years, the last time in 1990.

England (4-6, 3-4, 4th seed in 8-3A) is making its first appearance since 1995. Nettleton makes back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 1996-97. Helena-West Helena's (5-5, 4-3 in 5A Southeast) 3rd seed is its highest since 1984.

Cave City unbeaten, for now
September 20, 2007

By Hootens.com Staff

CAVE CITY - Starting the second year of a new program 3-0 is nice, but Cave City coach Jon Bradley has no delusions about how long the run will continue. The Cavemen face No. 7 Harding Academy week 4 in Searcy. Senior running back Dylan Moody has rolled up 539 yards in three games, including 189 yards and two TDs in the 51-34 win over Mountain View week 3. He also intercepted a lateral and dashed 68 yards for another score. Senior fullback Justin Frazier (6-1, 175) played his first full game since tearing his ACL five weeks ago. The injury will require surgery, but he's putting it instead of forfeiting his senior season. Frazier wears a customized brace as he tries to work himself back into shape.

Bradley worries about his team's secondary going against pass-happy Harding Academy. He brought in junior Dakota Tuggle during the Mountain View game to replace one of two sophomore starting cornerbacks, and he will start against the Wildcats. Though Tuggle is older, it's his first year to play football. Senior Brandon Milligan (6-1, 165), the starting quarterback, will play more at safety this week.

Caleb Shock, a Harding Academy volunteer assistant coach, played on the Vilonia team that made the state finals in 2003 when Bradley was a Vilonia assistant. Before their scheduled game last year, Shock showed Bradley a new play he had devised for the Double-Wing offense Bradley employs on the condition he not use it in the game. Bradley told him that wouldn't be possible with the game only minutes away. But lightening associated with a nearby tornado caused the postponement of the game until the following Monday. Bradley says with the extra time to work on the play, he did run it in the game, but it didn't work. Harding Academy won 41-22.

PIGGOTT - Michael Ely scored two touchdowns on runs of 11 yards and 1 yard as the Piggott Mohawks rolled to a 33-6 win over the Cave City Cavemen in preseason scrimmage action Thursday night.

Ely scored both his touchdowns in the first quarter. His 11-yard score came with 10:26 left in the quarter, and his 1-yard plunge happened with 7:42 showing on the clock. Brian Seal kicked the extra point on the second touchdown, making the score 13-0.

The Mohawks scored once more before the end of the opening stanza. Justin Howell ran in from 4 yards away with 2:41 left in the first quarter. Seals' PAT made it 20-0.

Piggott scored once more before halftime when T.J. Harris rambled 22 yards for a touchdown with 3:18 left in the second quarter. Seal kicked the score to 27-0.

The Mohawks final touchdown came early in the third quarter when Jim Threat scored on a 9-yard touchdown run.

Cave City's only touchdown came on the last play of the game. Brandon Milligan completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Justin Meskimen as time expired on the game clock.

Mohawk assistant coach Shawn Hearn said the coaching staff was very pleased with the performance of their players.

"We played hard and learned alot," Hearn said.

Hearn gleamed over his new boss David Hendrix.

"He gets these kids' attention," Hearn said. "He gets on them hard, but he praises them as well."

Hearn has been on the Mohawk staff for the last five years and has worked for three head coaches and feels Hendrix, a Rector alum, will make a huge impact on Piggott football.

"We feel like that tonight will be the start," Hearn said, "of instilling a little Mohawk pride back into this school and into this community."

Piggott opens its season at home next Friday night against Portgageville, MO. Cave City will play its first offical game as a varsity program the same night at the University of Central Arkansas against Johnson County Westside.
