How Hazen stopped Earle

HAZEN - The Hazen Hornets used two defensive stands last week to upset Earle 20-14 in overtime and move to a surprising 5-0. The ninth-ranked Hornets made a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter, then kept Earle's speedy offense out of the end zone in the overtime to pull off the win.

Senior Terry Loudermilk's (6-1, 185) 8-yard, off-tackle run gave Hazen the win. He scored two touchdowns, and along with sophomore Darius Mosby (5-11, 190), rushed for more than 100 yards. Mosby has "started growing up a little bit," says Hazen coach Joe Besacon. His best game was a 143-yard effort against McCrory.

Besacon worried about Earle's speed, but he was happy with his team's execution. "We did a lot of cross-keying and talked a lot about assignment football," Besacon says. "Don't worry about what your buddy's doing, and when the play comes to you, you can't miss. Go make the tackle." Hazen used lineman stunts and linebacker blitzes to disrupt Earle's slow-developing Single Wing. The Hornets held  the Bulldogs, who had averaged 27 yards per carry, without a rushing TD.
