November 3, 2005

NEARsports.com

LEPANTO - The East Poinsett County Warriors held on to their #1 seed in the playoffs, and knocked the Salem Greyhounds out of post season contention in the process. The Warriors won the 3AA game 39-0 Thursday night at Steve Tyler Field.

Ked Madden scored three touchdowns, two on a pair of 52-yard punt returns and pulled down three interceptions. EPC (7-2, 6-1) scored all of its points in the first half.

"They haven't been kicking to me this year," said Madden. "They usually kick it away from me. I'm just trying to be like my boy, (Marcus) Monk."

Madden got his first touchdown with 8:55 left in the opening quarter on a 20-yard catch from Brett Hardin. Lando Bass kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0.

Hardin's arm put the following points on the board for EPC, this time on a 37-yard pass to Keun Joplin. Bass kicked the score to 14-0.

Hardin found Joplin again on the next touchdown and made the score 20-0 on a 4-yard pass with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

Madden got his first of two 52-yard punt return touchdowns as time expired in the first quarter. The scoreboard read 26-0 as the second quarter began.

EPC scored on its first play of the second quarter with Madden's second 52-yard punt return. Bass' extra point made it 33-0.

The Warriors got their last touchdown with 7:16 remaining in the half. Chris Davis scored on an 11-yard run to set the final score.

"We executed well," said EPC Coach Mark Courtney. "That's probably about as good as we have executed all year. It all came together for us and this was the right time for it to come together."

LEPANTO - The Perryville Mustangs used a fake extra point attempt with 2:00 left in the game to edge out the East Poinsett County Warriors, 29-28 in round 2 of the Class AA playoffs Friday night.

Perryville (10-2) had scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Lance Munn to Wes Kuhn to pull to within a point of EPC (8-1). The Mustangs lined up for the extra point, and the holder, Josh Golleher, popped up and ran around the end to score the two point conversion and give Perryville the win.

"It was an audible," said Perryville Coach Doug Corley. "Josh called that play. It worked perfectly."

EPC scored first with only :54 left in the first half. Spencer Harston completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Dee Hendrix. Jose Delgado's kick made the score 7-0.

The Warriors doubled their score on the first play of the second half. Brandon Sturdivant sprinted 74 yards to put EPC up 14-0 with only 20 seconds gone from the clock in the third quarter.

Perryville scored its first points with 7:34 left in the third stanza. Dustyn McAnally scored on a 1-yard dive to pull the Mustangs to within eight points, 14-6.

Sturdivant doubled EPC's lead again with 9:48 left in the game on a 50 yard interception returned for a touchdown.

Perryville closed to within a touchdown with 6:52 left to play when Tidwell ran in from 8 yards out. McAnally kicked the extra point to make it 28-21.

"We shot ourselves in the foot so many times tonight," said Corley. "Our guys just kept going and kept going. They knew it was still our game."

Munn completed 25 of 31 passes for the Mustangs for 196 yards and two touchdowns. McAnally led the Perryville ground game with 148 yards on 10 carries.

Harston's 12 of 20 passing was good for 151 yards for East Poinsett County. Sturdivant gained 146 yards on 12 caries for the Warriors.

SALEM - Brandon Sturdivant rushed for 273 yards on 24 carries and four touchdowns, and intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown in East Poinsett County's 58-25 victory over the Salem Greyhounds here Thursday night.

The win gave the Warriors (7-0, 6-0) the outright 3AA Conference championship and a #1 seed in the opening round of the Class AA Playoffs next week. Salem (6-3, 4-2) secured the #3 seed.

EPC got in the scoring column early on Sturdivant's first touchdown, an 11-yard run, with just over a minute gone from the clock. José Delgado, 7 of 8 on extra points on the night, kicked the score to 7-0.

The Warriors doubled their score with 4:09 left in the opening period when receiver Ked Madden sprinted to the end zone from 66 yards away on a reverse.

Salem got its first points on a 10-yard run from Mike Innis with 3:30 left in the first quarter. John Arrington's kick cut the lead in half, 14-7.

EPC got one more score before the first quarter expired on a 15-yard run from Erik Campbell. Delgado's kick made the score 21-7 with 1:01 showing on the clock.

The Greyhounds answered on the second play of the second quarter. Quarterback Chad Willett tossed a 21-yarder to Innis to bring Salem back to within 8 points. EPC blocked the point after try.

A Warrior fumble recovery at the Salem 36-yard line sparked a touchdown on the next play. EPC quarterback Spencer Harston found Keun Joplin in the end zone with 9:34 left in the half to extend the lead again, 28-13.

Sturdivant got his second touchdown with 1:59 left before intermission on a 64 yard run. Delgado split the uprights again to make it 35-13.

Salem scored once more before heading for the locker room. Innis threw a halfback pass 13 yards to Kyle Estes to set the halftime score at 35-19.

The Greyhounds pulled to within 10 points, 35-25, on another Willett touchdown pass, this time a 40-yarder to Phillip Taylor with 7:24 left in the third stanza. The two-point try failed.

EPC took over from there. After a 31 yard field goal from Delgado in the waining minutes of the third quarter, the Warriors scored 20 unanswered points in the final period to set the final score. Sturdivant scored on fourth quarter runs of 14 yards and 1 yard, and returned an interception 54 yards for EPC's final touchdown.

EPC runs past Trumann
November 2, 2002

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

TRUMANN — The East Poinsett County Warriors had to do something they normally don’t do to beat Trumann.

Normally a passing team, the Warriors actually gained more yardage on the ground Friday night. The adjustment worked as EPC beat the Wildcats 27-7 in a 3AAA conference game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Trumann (5-4, 3-3 3AAA) put the first points on the board with 7:18 left in the half. Clint Trigg scored on a 1-yard run and Revis Kemper hit the PAT to make it 7-0.

EPC (6-3, 4-2 3AAA) scored on the ensuing kickoff when Marcus Monk ran 89 yards for the score. The two-point try failed and Trumann still led, 7-6.

The Warriors scored again with just 1:32 left in the half when Brandon Fortenberry ran in a 9-yard quarterback keeper. Fortenberry’s two-point pass to P.J. Lacy set EPC’s 14-7 halftime lead.

EPC played clock-control football in the second half, keeping the ball almost the entire third quarter and scoring with 2:15 on the clock. Marc Smith scored on a 2-yard run to make it 20-7.

The Warriors’ final touchdown came early in the fourth quarter when Jeohn Johnson scored from a yard out. Smith kicked the PAT to set the final score.

“They did a tremendous job preparing for our passing game,” said EPC coach Mark Courtney. “We normally have 15 or 20 completions a game.”

The Warriors gained 125 yards on the ground and only 115 in the air. Monk led all receivers with 72 yards and six catches. “He’s Super Monk,” said Courtney. “If anything comes close to him, he’ll catch it.”

“They are a tough team to stop,” said Trumann coach Ricky Timbs. “They have good receivers and great quickness.”

Trumann travels to Osceola (3-6, 3-3) next week to try and secure a playoff spot. The winner will claim the conference’s fourth and final playoff slot. “We have our work cut out for us,” said Timbs.

East Poinsett County has clinched a playoff berth and will host Piggott (0-9, 0-6) in its final regular season game. The Warriors will be the third-place team out of 3AAA
