Pirates barrel their way into
playoffs By David Grim GOSNELL - The Gosnell Pirates needed to win to get into the Class 4A playoffs. They took care of that task and then some, defeating the Trumann Wildcats 41-8 Thursday night in 4A-3 conference action. Gosnell (5-5, 4-3) made the score 6-0 on a 70-yard interception return from Jevon Smith with 6:30 remaining in the opening quarter. Quarterback Nathan Wright snuck in from a yard out as the first quarter came to a close. Tyler George ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0. George added a 1-yard touchdown with 7:19 remaining in the half to make the score 20-0. Smith got an offensive touchdown from 3 yards away and made the score 26-0 with 2:48 left in the half. Wright went to the air with 17 seconds to go in the half on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Hughes. Smith added two points to make the halftime score 34-0. George finished the Pirates' scoring in the third quarter by running in from 3 yards out and kicking the extra point. Trumann (2-5, 3-6) averted the shutout in the closing seconds of the game. Quarterback Blaike Jones ran in from 35 yards out and completed a two-point pass to set the final score. Three Gosnell backs shared the workload on the ground. Clint McHan ran for 80 yards on 7 carries. George tallied 77 yards on 12 carries, while Smith added 76 yards on 7 carries. |

After a scoreless first quarter Gosnell (1-2) began the scoring on a 5-yard run from Clint McHan. Matt Redden's extra point made the score 7-0 with 5:10 left in the second quarter. Redden put the Pirates on the board again with just 3 seconds left in the half on a 22-yard field goal. Scoring resumed in the fourth quarter when Jevon Smith ran in a 54-yard touchdown with 5:25 remaining. Redden's foot made it 17-0. Tyler George turned a screen pass into a 49-yard sprint to the end zone for Smith late in the fourth. Redden again made the extra point to make it 24-0. Gosnell rallies, beats Colts
36-35 By David Grim GOSNELL - The Gosnell Pirates were playing catch-up football all night long, but they caught up when it mattered, beating the Rivercrest Colts 36-35 Friday night in 3AAAA conference play. Gosnell (6-1, 3-1) trailed 35-28 late in the first quarter. With 2:05 left to play Jevon Smith ran in a 19-yard touchdown for the Pirates, making the score 35-34. Gosnell was attempting two-point conversions all night because their place kicker, Hunter Hughes, was out of the lineup with a broken arm. The first two-point try failed, but was called back on a pass interference penalty. On the second try, Gosnell took the lead and the game on the feet of Tyler George. Rivercrest (1-6, 1-3) still had one more try to reclaim the lead, but George intercepted a pass at the Gosnell 25-yard line to ice the game. Gosnell scored first and made the score 6-0 on a 1-yard run from Clint McHan with 43 seconds left in the opening quarter. Rivercrest answered early in the second quarter and took the lead when Josh Fleming passed 9 yards to Malcolm Smith. Fleming kicked the extra point to make it 7-6. Gosnell went back ahead 12-7 on a 4-yard run from George with 6:45 left in the half. The lead went back to the Colts with 2:30 remaining in the half, 13-12, when Fleming passed 14 yards to Marlon Tramble. Rivercrest extended the lead, 20-12, with 3 seconds left before intermission. A flea-flicker resulted in a 42-yard pass from Tramble to Danton Jackson. Fleming made the extra point. The Colts extended their lead with 4:58 left in the third quarter. Jackson scored on a 70-yard sprint and Fleming kicked the score to 27-12. Gosnell cut the lead to 27-20 on a 1-yard quarterback keeper from Chance Vaughn. George got the two-pointer with 3:55 remaining in the third. Another trick play saw Rivercrest score on a 30-yard pass from Travis Talley to Smith. The PAT was busted and Tramble, the holder, found Kenneth Burton in the end zone for two points, making it 35-20. Gosnell got back to within a touchdown when Jevon Smith ran in from 46 yards out. George got two more points to make it 35-28 with 7:10 left to play. Jevon Smith led all rushers with 206 yards on 19 carries for Gosnell. George notched 109 yards on 21 carries. |

Gosnell edges Rivercrest; historic streak
ends By David Grim WILSON - It had been 23 consecutive trips to the playoffs for the Rivercrest Colts. It was the longest active post season streak in the state. It came to an end Friday night, as the Gosnell Pirates held off a Rivercrest rally and beat the Colts 14-13 in a 3AAA conference game. The game was a must-win for both teams to make the playoffs. "We get to go play Prairie Grove and they get to stay home," said Gosnell Coach Brian Sims. "I wouldn't have it any other way!" "This is a rival game. It's a huge win for us, especially on their field. It's been over 20 years since we have won here. Our seniors really stepped up and made this happen." After a scoreless first quarter, Gosnell (5-4-1, 4-3) got on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run from Josh Anderson. The two-point try failed, and the Pirates led 6-0 going into halftime. Rivercrest (4-5, 4-3) got the ball to start the second half and drove to the Gosnell 7-yard line. On 4th and goal from the 7, Charles Harris seemed to score a Colt touchdown. The official on top of the play signaled that Harris had scored. Another official from behind the line of scrimmage overruled the call, and said that Harris had gone down at the 3. "That was a blown call," said Rivercrest Coach Mike Smith. "They blew that call and it cost us the game. You can print that." The Colts held Gosnell deep in its own territory on the following possession. On 4th and 15 from the 24, a bad snap on the punt attempt gave Rivercrest the ball on the Pirate 16. Four plays later, with :12 left in the third quarter, Harris got in the end zone from 8 yards out to tie the score. The Colts took the lead 7-6 after a successful extra point attempt. Gosnell used almost half of the fourth quarter to drive 73 yards in 12 plays and reclaim the lead. Anderson scored on a 28-yard run with 6:31 remaining, and Ryan Humphrey ran in for another two points to make the score 14-13. A short kickoff gave Rivercrest the ball at the 50-yard line. 5 plays later, Danton Jackson scored on a 21-yard sprint to the end zone with 4:32 left to play. The extra point missed by only inches to the right, and the score remained 14-13. Gosnell's final possession sealed the victory. Twice faced with fourth down, the Pirates converted on 4th and 1 from their own 33, and 4th and 3 from their own 46. Anderson's 101 yards on 24 carries led Gosnell's three-man rushing attack. Jackson led the game with 113 yards rushing on 13 carries for the Colts. The loss marks Rivercrest's first sub .500 season since 1980. | |

EPC holds on in shootout,
52-37 By David Grim LEPANTO - Brett Hardin passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns as the East Poinsett County Warriors outlasted the Gosnell Pirates 52-37 Friday night at Warrior Stadium. Gosnell (0-1) took the lead early on a 15 yard touchdown run from Clint McHan. Matt Redden's extra point made the score 7-0 with 3:42 left in the opening quarter. Spencer Blount's sack notched a safety for the Pirates and put them up 9-0 as the first quarter wound down. The Warriors (1-0) made the score 9-6 early in the second quarter when Hardin passed 41 yards to Ked Madden. EPC took the lead on its next possession with a 44 yard touchdown pass from Hardin to Keun Joplin. Hardin hit Chris Davis for the two-point conversion to make the score 14-9 with 8:10 left in the half. Gosnell took its last lead of the night, 15-14, with 5:19 left in the half on a 3 yard touchdown run by Josh Anderson.
The Warriors reclaimed the lead for good with 5 seconds remaining before intermission when Hardin passed to Madden for a 77 yard touchdown. Hardin found Joplin for the two-pointer to make the halftime score 22-15. Gosnell's Ronnie Edwards returned the second half kickoff 67 yards to the EPC 12. McHan took it the rest of the way on the next play to pull the Pirates to within a point, 22-21. Hardin scored on a quarterback keeper to put the Warriors up 28-21, and passed another 77 yard touchdown, this time to Joseph Peridore, to give EPC a 34-21 lead with 7:37 left in the third quarter. McHan kept the Pirates within striking distance on a one yard plunge with 1:15 left in the third quarter, but EPC kept a step ahead by scoring with 12 seconds left in the quarter on a 42 yard fumble return by T.J. Huggins. The scoreboard read 40-27 as the fourth quarter began. The Pirates fought back again. Charles Crigger passed a 67 yard touchdown to Trey Mace, and then found Anderson for the two-point conversion to pull Gosnell back to within 5 points, 40-35, with 8:51 left in the game. Madden iced the game for the Warriors on an 8 yard touchdown run with 4:25 remaining, making the score 46-35. After an intentional safety made the score 46-37, Madden intercepted the first Pirate pass after the free kick and returned it 70 yards for the Warriors final score. Madden caught 8 passes for 159 yards, rushed for 42 yards on 5 carries, and gained 113 return yards for a total of 314 all-purpose yards. Joplin caught an additional 5 passes for 97 yards. Chris Vaughn led the rushing attack for Gosnell with 116 yards on 14 carries. |

Gosnell plays spoiler, clips
Rivercrest By David Grim GOSNELL - The Gosnell Pirates, with no chance of making the Class AAA playoffs, defeated the Rivercrest Colts 18-14 and sent the Colts on the road for the opening round of postseason play. With the loss, Rivercrest (7-2, 5-2) will enter the playoffs as the third seed from the 3AAA conference, and travel to the play Ozark (8-1-1), the second seed from the 4AAA conference. All of the game's scoring came in the first half. Gosnell (6-4, 4-3) scored first on a 2-yard touchdown run from Mario Young to put the Pirates up 6-0 with 1:37 left in the opening quarter.

With :23 left in the first quarter, Kyle Murphy threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Chris Barnes. Barnes kicked the extra point to put Rivercrest ahead 7-6. Young scored again early in the second quarter and put the Pirates ahead 12-7 on an 8-yard run to the end zone. Rivercrest countered again, this time on a 4-yard touchdown run from Marcus Arnold with 7:18 remaining in the half. Barnes' extra point made the score 14-12. Gosnell quarterback Hunter Hughes set what would be the final score with 2:31 left in the half. Hughes scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper to make the score 18-14. The Pirates had two running backs exceed the century mark in rushing yardage. Young ran for 133 yards on 22 carries, and Byron Thompson gained 130 yards on 13 carries. For only the second time this season, Arnold was held under 100 yards rushing. Arnold gained 98 yards on 20 carries. Rivercrest lost to Osceola the only other time Arnold didn't reach 100 yards. |

Gosnell
pulls away from Berryville By David
Grim Gosnell outscored Berryville 18-0 in the fourth quarter of a 46-28 victory in the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs Friday night. Ross Brown, who gained 200 yards and scored five touchdowns on 19 carries, gave the Pirates the lead for good on a 4-yard touchdown run with 7:56 remaining. Perry Dixon’s 43-yard touchdown run gave Gosnell a 40-28 lead with 3:49 left in the game and, after an interception by Shawn Lee, Brown scored on a 4-yard run with 2:01 to play. “I’m living out my
dream,” Brown said after scoring five touchdowns for the second
consecutive week. “The line was making holes big enough for trucks. I owe
it all to them.” Once again the 3AAA champion Pirates won with a strong ground game. Marcus Anderson rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Dixon added 61 yards and a touchdown on seven attempts. Joseph Harris kept Berryville (9-2-1) in the game with 161 yards and three touchdowns on 38 carries. “We knew coming in that they were very strong up front,” said Gosnell coach Freddy Bowen. “Their running back runs the ball extremely well. “They matched us punch for punch the whole game. Our defense just stepped it up in the fourth quarter. That last interception that sealed the victory just shows that these guys never give up and they just keep fighting. “Like they say in the NCAA,” Bowen continued, “we’re in the elite eight. It’s a great feeling. We’re going to celebrate this win and start making preparations for next week.” For three quarters, the teams traded scores. Gosnell stopped the Bobcats on their opening drive and took over at midfield. Marcus Anderson capped a 10-play, 50-yard drive with a 4-yard run late in the first quarter. Berryville, the runnerup from the 1AAA conference, struck on the next drive. The Bobcats drove 61 yards in 14 plays. Harris punched it in from a yard out with 10:38 left in the second quarter to make it 7-7. Brown scored his first of five touchdowns on the Pirates’ next drive, giving his team a 14-7 lead on a 5-yard run with 4:55 left in the half. Berryville answered again with 1:02 remaining in the second quarter. Quarterback Steven Truelove hit Corey Smith with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tie the score again, 14-14. Gosnell had enough time to take a 20-14 halftime lead. Brown broke a 53-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left in the half. The Pirates got the ball to start the second half and wasted no time picking up where they left off. Brown scored on the first play from scrimmage, a 61-yard run, and added a two-point conversion for a 28-14 lead. Berryville countered by scoring on its next two possessions. Harris scored on two runs of 1 and 2 yards to tie the score at 28 going into the fourth quarter. But the final period, and with it the victory, would belong to the Pirates. “Our game plan was to survive,” said Berryville coach Carl Owens, who was coaching the last game in a 36-year career. “We knew we would be way behind on speed. “We hung in there and had opportunities until that fourth quarter. They are tough on defense and we just didn’t get the job done.” |

Gosnell rips Trumann By David Grim Marcus Anderson gained 177 yards on 14 carries, and David Blount ran for 113 yards on 10 attempts. Anderson scored two touchdowns en route to the victory. Gosnell (7-0, 4-0 3AAA) scored 20 points in the last four minutes of the first quarter. Anderson scored first for the Pirates on a 13-yard run with 3:49 on the clock. Pirate quarterback Adam Rapert found Anthony Davis from 33 yards away for the second touchdown with 2:12 left in the period. Blount saw the end zone on a 79-yard scamper with just 16 seconds left in the opening quarter. Neither team would score again in the half, setting the halftime score at 20-0. Scoring resumed for the Pirates in the third quarter when Robert Thomas and Anderson both ran for touchdowns. Anderson’s run was from 66 yards out. With 1:57 left in the game and the score 33-0, Trumann (4-3, 2-2 3AAA) got on the board with a 6-yard run from Adam Sloan to set the final score. “If we win out,” Gosnell coach Freddy Bowen told his players after the game, “all this hair is coming off.” “I very proud of our defense,” Bowen said. “I think our first-team ‘D’ is one of the better units in the state.” “We’ve struggled offensively the last two or three games,” said Trumann coach Ricky Timbs. “We’ve got to get back on track if we want to make the playoffs.” “We still have a legitimate shot at the playoffs,” continued Timbs. “We were in this same situation last year when we made it in and won the first round.” Gosnell takes its unblemished record to Harrisburg next Friday night. Trumann will travel to Piggott. |
