Highland defense of championship caliber
October 4, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

HIGHLAND - The Highland (4-0-1, 2-0 in 3-4A) defense came up with the kind of play last week that turns good teams into potential teams of destiny. Senior safety Preston King (6-0, 165) stepped in front of an Osceola receiver to intercept a pass at the Rebel 10 with 19 seconds left to preserve a 12-6 victory.
The win keeps Highland unbeaten heading into the second half of the season, when the Rebels will play conference heavyweights Valley View, Trumann and Pocahontas.

"Osceola is a tough team, and it's really tough to go in there and beat them," Coach Clay Wiggins says. Wiggins says the defensive key was preventing long runs. Senior linebacker Jade Lowder (6-1, 180) made 12 tackles. Junior cornerback Matt Schneider (5-11, 160) added ten tackles. Wiggins says the tight finish against a tough team will help his team later in the year, like playoff time.

Sophomore starting tailback Michael Tarver (6-3, 193) will miss at least the next two games after cracking a small bone in his foot on the first offensive series of the game. Tarver ran for more than 90 yards in the two games he started before last week. He earned his first start week 3 in place of King, who rested an injured back.

Highland has won both games it has played against Osceola, beating the Seminoles 27-20 last season, their first in 3-4A.

Pocahontas wins thriller to remain undefeated
November 2, 2006

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

HIGHLAND - The Pocahontas Redskins completed a 10-0 regular season and a 7-0 season in the 3AAAA conference, holding off their arch-rivals, the Highland Rebels, 28-26 Thursday night.

Pocahontas led 28-14 late in the fourth quarter, but Highland (7-3, 4-3) scored twice in the final 2:43, first on a 51-yard run by Scotty Woodson to make it 28-20, and then on a 1-yard run by quarterback David Street with no time on the clock.

But Highland's two-point conversion pass attempt was intercepted by Jason Wren and Pocahontas held on to win.

Pocahontas quarterback Craig Green threw two of his three touchdown passes for the Redskins in the first half. Green found Tim Sullivan in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown with 4:31 left in the first quarter, and Ben Hibbard for an 11-yard score on the first play of the second quarter. Ian Bickers' extra points made the score 14-0 at halftime.

Highland came to life in the second half. Scotty Woodson scored the first of three touchdowns with 8:12 left in the third quarter to make it 14-6.

The Redskins made it 21-6 with a 23-yard touchdown run from Sullivan with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter.

Woodson got his second touchdown, a 1-yard plunge, with 10:41 left in the game. He also ran in the two point conversion to make the score 21-14.

The Redskins score their final touchdown with 6:24 left to play and made the score 28-14. Green notched his third touchdown pass, this time for 6 yards, to Sullivan.

Green completed 16 of 26 passes for 172 yards and three of the Redskins' four touchdowns. Woodson gained 103 yards on 14 carries.

Pocahontas defense prevails; Redskins win 14-7
October 14, 2005

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

POCAHONTAS - The Pocahontas Redskins made two big defensive stands deep in their own territory in the fourth quarter and held on to a 14-7 victory over the Highland Rebels.

Both squads were undefeated coming into the game. The win put the Redskins in a tie for first place in the 2AAA Conference with Newport (4-3, 4-0).

Highland (6-1, 3-1) scored its only touchdown with 2:39 left in the opening quarter. Joey Gaskins recovered a Redskin fumble at the Rebel 43-yard line and returned it 30 yards to the Pocahontas 27. Three plays later, Nick Poulson ran in a 6-yard touchdown and Johnathan Tate kicked the extra point to give Highland a 7-0 lead.

The Redskins (7-0, 4-0) countered midway through the second quarter. Chase Cissel scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:54 left before halftime. Ryan Broyles' extra point tied the game.

Nick Dawson's fumble recovery early in the third quarter set up the winning touchdown for the Redskins. Dawson grabbed the ball at the Highland 25 and returned it 5 yards to the 20. After two incomplete passes, the third try found the end-zone. Michael Creason passed 20-yards to Jordan Andrews and Broyles kicked the score to 14-0.

Highland drove deep into Redskin territory twice in the fourth quarter. Jason Wren recovered a Rebel fumble at his own 18 to stop one drive, and Pocahontas held on fourth and four at the Redskin 19 to seal the victory.

"I have to give credit to our defensive coaches," said Pocahontas Head Coach David Williams. "The defense won the game for us. We start a lot of sophomores and juniors. They did an outstanding job."
