Hoxie thumps Heber Springs 35-14
September 4, 2008

By Barry Groomes
Hootens.com

Hoxie backed up its preseason prediction, whipping Heber Springs 35-14 Thursday night in the Simmons First/Hootens.com Kickoff Week at Harding University in Searcy.

Hoxie, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, meshed a solid running game with an effective passing attack. Mustang senior running back Blaine Middlecoff galloped for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 58-yard jaunt early in the third quarter. Heber Springs lost four turnovers and was penalized 13 times for 100 yards.

Heber Springs cut the advantage to 28-14 when junior running back Braylon Mitchell scored his second TD. Mitchell finished with 124 yards and two TDs.

But Hoxie responded with a dominating fourth-quarter drive that chewed up almost seven minutes and ended with Clay Hart's 15-yard TD with 1:13 left. Brad Cook's extra-point set the final margin.

Glen Rose corrals Mustangs
November 23, 2007

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

MALVERN - The Hoxie Mustangs season came to a harsh end Friday night as the Glen Rose Beavers shut out the Mustangs 35-0 in the third round of the Class AAA State Playoffs.

Glen Rose (12-1) fumbled the opening kickoff and Hoxie (10-2) recovered at the Beaver 48. The Mustangs drove to the 16-yard line in 14 plays, but Glen Rose stopped Hoxie on 4th down and 12 to take over on downs.

The Beavers wasted no time marching the opposite direction, traveling 84 yards on seven consecutive complete passes from quarterback Nathan Jones. Nathan capped the drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to J. Keith with 4:00 left in the opening quarter. Brant Abbott, a perfect 5 of 5 on extra point attempts, made the score 7-0.

Glen Rose scored its next touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Nathan's brother Jake Jones ran in from 3 yards out to make the score 14-0.

Michael Blancher increased the lead to 21-0 on a 55-yard sprint to the end zone with 2:59 left in the half.

Glen Rose would wait until the end of the third quarter to score again. Nathan Jones found Blancher on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds left before the third quarter horn.

Freshman Steven Kehner scored the Beavers' final touchdown with 8:35 left in the game on a 1-yard plunge.

Nathan Jones completed 15 of 20 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns for Glen Rose. Blancher was the leading rusher for the Beavers with 77 yards on just 2 carries.

Three Hoxie running backs split the duties for the Mustangs. Alex Ward gained 70 yards on 14 carries. Houston Waldrupe tallied 67 yards on 13 caries, while Tyler Thompson added 62 yards on 12 carries.

Corning stays unbeaten with 13-3 road win over Hoxie
October 12, 2007

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

HOXIE - The Corning Bobcats won a defensive struggle over the Hoxie Mustangs here Friday night, 13-3, to remain unbeaten in 3A-3 conference play.

James Peterson scored both of the game's only touchdowns for the Bobcats. Peterson got two 1-yard touchdowns in the first and second quarters to help Corning (6-0, 3-0) take sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

Hoxie (6-1, 3-1) averted the shutout when Brad Cook kicked a 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

"These kids deserve so much credit," Corning head coach Mark Smith said of his Bobcats. "They go 100 miles an hour on every snap. They never give up. They just play aggressive football."

"Hoxie deserves a lot of credit," continued Smith. "They've got a really good team."

"We didn't play like we are capable of playing," said Hoxie head coach Tom Sears. "I'm not taking anything away from the job Corning did. We had the opportunity to make plays and we just didn't do it."

Defense was the theme of the night. Corning gained 208 total yards while Hoxie tallied 166.

Both quarterbacks threw for just over 100 yards. Corning's Matt Ryan completed 3 of 4 passes for 109 yards, while Hoxie's Houston Hancock went 7 of 19 for 106 yards.

Tyler Thompson led all ball carriers with 89 yards on 8 carries for the Mustangs.

Hoxie vs. Corning just stink on stink
October 11, 2007

By David Wallace

HOXIE - The key to the 3-3A showdown between Hoxie (6-0, 3-0) and Corning (5-0, 2-0) could be ball control. At least that's the way Hoxie coach Tom Sears sees it.

"They're very big," Sears says. "We're pretty good size ourselves. Whoever controls the line of scrimmage will have the advantage."

Hoxie is not known for a ball-control offense, but Sears says the Mustangs need to "maintain the ball" and "control some drives" to keep the ball away from Corning's ground-eating running game. "If they get the lead and get you on your heels, it's a hard time getting the ball back," Sears says.

Hoxie's offensive guards are smaller than the rest of its linemen (185 and 175) by design. The Mustangs trap and pull often. Sears thinks his team will be quicker along the front line than Corning.

The series has been even the last few years, propelling this matchup to rivalry status. Hoxie leads 4-3 in this decade. One of the better games during that stretch saw Corning come back from a 22-0 deficit to win 28-22 in 2003.

Hoxie-Walnut Ridge rivalry crosses lines
September 6, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

WALNUT RIDGE - Walnut Ridge coach Larry Treadway pulls no punches in describing play in Hoxie's Week-1, 22-15 win at Walnut Ridge, characterizing a blind-side hit on junior receiver Robert Rider (6-0, 160) as a "cheap shot." Hoxie senior linebacker Tyler Thompson (6-0, 200) peeled back to block after the Mustangs intercepted a Walnut Ridge pass. After lying motionless for a few anxious moments, Rider convulsed, witnesses said. An ambulance took him to a local hospital. He was then transported to Arkansas Children's Hospital. "Was it a clean hit? He didn't clip him. That's true," Treadway says. "A cheap hit is what I'm going to call it. It didn't have anything to do with the play."

Treadway says the block occurred on the 50 while Hoxie senior Alex Ward (5-10, 165) had run back the interception to the Walnut Ridge 20. Hoxie coach Tom Sears says Thompson hit Rider right next to the play. "What everybody's supposed to do on an interception is peel back and block," Sears says. "It's stuff you work on." Rider sustained a concussion. Despite a frightening scene on the field, Treadway says he'll only miss two games.

The two coaches disagree on just about every aspect of this game. Treadway says four of Hoxie's five penalties were unsportsmanlike conduct calls. Sears says one was a facemask call that was "just happens in a game."

Treadway made the decision to pull the plug on the series this summer, but episodes of poor sportsmanship continue. He says Hoxie fans used diesel fuel to burn a message with an obscenity and a number of horseshoes into the turf on the Monday before the game causing about $5,000 in damage.

Sears says it's just like things he's had to put up with. "They put Roundup on our field two years ago," he says of Walnut Ridge partisans. "Then this year, they spray-painted our field with paw prints and obscenities." Sears likens the shenanigans to what he witnessed with Paragould when he was student-teacher at Greene County Tech. Treadway says this rivalry has gone beyond the norm. He alleges someone from Hoxie ripped a dummy off his brand new blocking sled last year. "It cost me a thousand bucks to replace that," he says. "I'm not saying kids won't be kids, but apparently they're not held accountable at Hoxie."

Treadway says he took the high road by informing Sears of the series' impending end in the summer, instead of simply not renewing the contract later on. Sears says Treadway didn't tell him until he was busy with fall practice, and he's had to scramble to find a possible replacement. After the 2007-2008 school year, the two schools will stop playing in all sports except volleyball, which they compete in the same conference.

October 27, 2006

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

HOXIE - The Hoxie Mustangs stayed just ahead of the Piggott Mohawks all night long Friday and held on to win 27-18 in 3AAA conference action. The win kept the Mustangs in the playoff hunt, while it all but eliminated the Mohawks.

Alex Ward scored the first touchdown for Hoxie (4-4-1, 2-4). Ward ran in from 5 yards out and Brad Cook kicked the extra point to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Chris Troutman doubled Hoxie's score on a 24-yard touchdown run with 5:09 left in the first quarter. Cook again kicked the extra point.

Piggott (5-4, 2-4) scored its first touchdown on a 73-yard sprint form T.J. Harris. The extra point failed and the score was 14-6 with 19 seconds left in the first quarter.

Scoring resumed in the third quarter when Piggott's Michael Ely ran in a 3-yard touchdown with 6:27 on the clock. The two point try failed and  the scored was 14-12.

Jeff Johnson kept the Mustangs out of Piggott's reach with a 4-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Cook's extra point made it 21-12.

Harris got another touchdown for the Mohawks with 6:12 left to play. Harris ran in from 31 yards out to make it 21-18.

Hoxie iced the game when Ward ran in a 20-yard touchdown with :38 on the clock to set the final score.

Harris led all rushers with 245 yards on 21 carries for the Mohawks. Ward paced the Mustangs with 100 yards on 20 carries.

Rockets thump Hoxie JV squad, 36-8

HOXIE - Derris Hopkins had a hand in every Turrell Rocket touchdown at Crider Field in Hoxie Monday night. Hopkins threw for three scores and ran for the other two as the Rockets upended the Mustangs' JV squad, 36-8.

Turrell (3-0) opened the Derris Hopkins Show on a 52-yard run with 5:54 left in the opening quarter, making the score 6-0.

Hopkins' first touchdown pass came with 4:12 left in the half. Travis Selvy caught a 62-yarder and Teverice Williams added two points to make it 14-0.

Bruce Delaney caught the next one, a 12-yard touchdown pass with 52 ticks left in the half. Williams scored two more, making the halftime score 22-0.

Hopkins broke another long touchdown run, this time for 40 yards, with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter. The score stayed 28-0 after the two-point try failed.

Selvy caught Hopkins last touchdown pass for 43 yards. Travis Postell's two-point conversion turned on the mercy clock with :45 left in the third.

Hoxie (1-1) averted the shutout late in the fourth quarter with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Clay Hart to Josh Cypret. Hart passed to Dakota Richardson for another two points to set the final score.

"Our seniors played a great game," said Turrell head coach Albert Coleman. "I'm really proud of the way they played."

"I'm disappointed that we didn't play varsity this year," continued Coleman. "Marked Tree and Cross County are right there for first and second in our conference (3AA), but after that the last two playoff spots are up for grabs. I feel like we would have gotten one of them."

Hopkins finished with 163 yards rushing on 12 carries and 138 yards passing.

HOXIE - The Harrisburg Hornets staved off a rally from the Hoxie Mustangs and held on to win 28-21 at Crider Field Friday night in a game delayed 20 minutes by tornado warnings.

Harrisburg (2-2, 1-0 3AAA) led 22-13 at halftime and 28-13 in the third quarter as quarterback Nick Burnett, who ran for 104 yards on 27 carries, scored on runs of 18 and 1 yards and threw a 31-yard touchdown pass.

Hoxie got back to within a point, 14-13 on a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Hancock with 1:05 left in the first half.

Harrisburg got one more score before intermission, the 31-yard pass from Burnett to Jake Beasley with two seconds left. Burnett hit Beasley again with a conversion pass that made it 22-13.

Hornets come from behind, beat Hoxie 25-14
September 16, 2005

By David Grim

HOXIE - The Harrisburg Hornets dominated the second half to come from behind and beat the Hoxie Mustangs 25-14 Friday night at Hoxie's Crider Field.

The Mustangs (2-1) held Harrisburg (3-0) to a three-and-out possession to begin the game, and then methodically marched 59 yards in 14 plays. Chris Shirley capped the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run with 2:07 left in the opening stanza. Drew Tillman's kick made the score 7-0.

The Hornets answered on the first play of the second quarter. Quarterback Nick Burnett sprinted 50 yards to score for Harrisburg. Hoxie's Travis Fender blocked the extra point, keeping the lead with the Mustangs.

Hoxie quarterback Tyler Coleman threw a 33-yard strike to Tillman with :52 left in the half. Tillman set the halftime score at 14-6 with his extra point.

Harrisburg took control of the game in the second half with a constant rushing attack. The Hornets did not throw a pass during the half.

Quinte Sproiling scored on a 1-yard plunge with 1:25 left in the third quarter to make the score 14-12, and Jakayis Hester scored the go-ahead touchdown for the Hornets on a 6-yard run with 7:52 left in the game.

Hoxie had one more opportunity to reclaim the lead, but the Hornets stopped the Mustangs with just over five minutes left to play on fourth and seven from the Harrisburg 47.

Sproiling scored the final touchdown with 1:35 left in the game. He ran in from 28 yards out and Joey Gentry kicked the extra point to set the final score.

"Our guys know what it takes to win," said Harrisburg Coach Keith Davis. "My hat's off to Hoxie. They played a heck of a game. But our guys just would not give up. They fought all the way to the end."

"They (Harrisburg) did a good job of getting the momentum and keeping it," said Hoxie Coach Tom Sears. "We tried to get it back and we got really close a couple times, but mistakes kept us from getting the momentum back."

Burnett led the Hornets' rushing attack with 151 yards on 19 carries. Sproiling paced the Harrisburg defense with 18 tackles, one sack and one tackle for a loss. Craig Stringer added 11 tackles for the Hornets.

The Blazers (3-1) split their running game up between four players, gaining 133 yards. Austin Byrd led the way with 46 yards on six carries.

Bret Gschwend scored the first Valley View touchdown on a 15-yard run with 3:40 left before halftime. Byrd kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0.

The Blazers' final touchdown came early in the third quarter. Burgi hit Chase Cooper with a 43-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was blocked, setting what would be the final score.

"I'm happy with the win," said Valley View Coach Randy Coleman. "There are a bunch of little things we need to work on to get better. We had three different chances to score in the first half and only scored on one of them. These are things we'll work on, but I don't care if it's chess or checkers, I want to win. I'm glad we did."

Alex Ward led all ball carriers, gaining 127 yards on 16 carries for Hoxie (0-1).

Hoxie outlasts Mountain View, 34-26
October 8, 2004

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

HOXIE - The Hoxie Mustangs took over sole possession of first place in the 2AAA conference with a 34-26 victory over the Mountain View Yellowjackets.

Mountain View (4-2, 2-1) struck first when Quinn Jones returned a Mustang fumble 48 yards for a touchdown and put the Yellowjackets up 6-0 with 7:38 left in the opening quarter.

Hoxie (5-1, 3-0) answered quickly on a 31 yard touchdown run from Reuben Vance. Quarterback Brett Shrable, who also serves as the Mustangs' place kicker, put the Mustangs up by one with his PAT.

The Yellowjackets reclaimed the lead on the first play of a busy second quarter. Richard Davis dove in from a yard out to give Mountain View its last lead, 12-7.

Blake Passalaqua put the Mustangs on top for good with two touchdown runs of 13 and 3 yards respectively. After his second touchdown, Hoxie led 20-12.

Shrable gave Hoxie its largest lead of the night on a one yard sneak with 41 seconds left in the half. The Mustangs led 27-12 after Shrable's kick.

Mountain View drove 67 yards in 35 seconds to pull back to within a touchdown before halftime. Trey Stinnett connected with Ethan Luther on a 20 yard touchdown pass to cap the drive. The Stinnett-Luther team added two more points to set the halftime score at 27-20.

After both teams went three and out to start the second half, Hoxie started a clock eating drive on their own 17, and drove 83 yards in 19 plays before scoring on another one yard run from Shrable. His kick gave Hoxie a 34-20 lead with 2:55 left in the third quarter.

Mountain View threatened to score early in the final quarter, but the Mustangs stopped the Yellowjackets on fourth and goal from the one yard line to temporarily preserve the score.

The Yellowjackets scored on their next drive with 6:52 left in the game. Davis scored from a yard away to pull Mountain View back to within eight points. However, the Mustangs would not relinquish the ball again.

"Our guys found ways to fight through adversity," said Hoxie coach Tom Sears. "We had some penalties that we don't normaly have, but we fought through it. I'm very pleased."

"They played their hearts out and left it all out on the field," said Mountain View coach Wayne Mayer of his team. "You can't ask for more than that."

Shrable led the Mustangs' rushing attack with 115 yards on 20 carries. Passalaqua added 109 yards on 21 carries.

Despite the losing effort, Stinnett completed 9 of 16 passes for 135 yards for the Yellowjackets.

Corning removes Hoxie from playoff picture

HOXIE - The Corning Bobcats played the spoiler role here Thursday night, defeating the Hoxie Mustangs, 28-22, and knocking them out of contention for the Class AAA playoffs. Though the Mustangs still had a mathematical shot, Yellville-Summitt added the final nail to the coffin by beating Mountain View, 34-8.

The Bobcats (6-4, 3-4) knew coming into the game they had no shot at a playoff berth. That didn't stop them from pulling out all the stops. "This team has played hard, and fought back, and never given up all season long," said Corning coach Mark Smith. "They've just played hard every down."

"I'd rather win six games in a season and not make the playoffs, than only win four games and get in," Smith continued. "I'm very, very proud of this team."

Corning got on the board first early in the opening quarter on a three yard touchdown run from running back Andy Earls. Earls added the two ponit conversion to give the Bobcats the 8-0 lead.

Hoxie (6-4, 3-4) followed with a run of 22 unanswered points. Mustang quarterback Brett Shrable tossed a 12 yard touchdown pass to Steven Tyler. Shrable called his own number on the two point try and tied the score, 8-8, with 2:50 left in the first quarter.

Shrable took the credit for the next Mustang score as well, running in from two yards out. A fake PAT failed, leving the score 14-8 early in the second stanza.

Shrable padded what seemed to be a stable lead with a 59 yard touchdown bomb to Mike Shirley with 4:29 left in the half. Chris Coats ran in what would be the Mustangs' last two points, making the score 22-8.

The Bobcats returned the ensuing kickoff to their own 24 yard line, and wasted no time working on the 14 point deficit. On the following play from scrimmage, Cory Godwin sprinted 76 yards to cut into the Mustang lead, 22-14.

The Mustangs, attempting to put another touchdown on the scoreboard before intermission, drove to the Corning 30. That's where Bobcat cornerback Josh Leverton picked off a Shrable pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. With 17 seconds left before halftime, Corning had cut the Hoxie lead to just two points, 22-20.

The Bobcats got their winning touchdown on an 18 play, 89 yard drive that ate up most of the third quarter and bled into the fourth. Zach Prater capped the drive with a four yard touchdown run. Godwin threw a halfback pass to Leverton for the two point conversion, setting the final score at 28-22.

"We just let it slip away from us," said Hoxie coach Tom Sears. "They got us with big plays before halftime and took that momentum into the second half. The better team won tonight."

Godwin led the Bobcats' rushing attack with 167 yards on 18 carries. Shrable gained 136 yards on 22 carries for the Mustangs.

With Hoxie out of the playoff picture, Mountain View takes the fourth seed from the 2AAA conference, following their loss to Yellville-Summitt.
