Jonesboro Westside breaks the huddle in the Warriors 50-0 win over the Manila Lions. The victory marked several milestones for Westside. It was the first time since 1999 that the Warriors have won two games in a row, and the first time since 1995 that Westside started a season 2-0. It is also the first time since 2002 that the Warriors have won more than one game in a season. Photo by Staci Smith.

Jonesboro Westside enjoys first win since '05
September 12, 2007

By Trent Tyler

JONESBORO - Jonesboro Westside coach E.T. Daniels absorbed a victory dousing following the Warriors' 19-13 week 2 win at Salem, but says he doesn't mind. "They didn't have to chase me very far because I'm kinda old," says Daniels, who turns 71 on Oct. 14. It wasn't any ordinary win; it was Westside's first after 15 straight losses, a streak that dated to early October 2005. "I'll turn back flips, jump off the press box, do anything I can if I can get a win," Daniels says. The veteran coach came out of retirement several years ago and is in his first season at Westside.

Saying he "had to crack the whip a little bit" when he took over, Daniels instituted team-building practices, such as rewarding big plays with helmet stickers. After every game, he hands out stickers in the shape of a football for interceptions, fumble recoveries and sacks; tomahawks for big hits, skull and cross bones for the leading tackler, and stars for other accomplishments. Following the win Week 2 win, Daniels gave stars to the entire offensive line. Senior tailback Jacob Sharp (6-0, 165) ran behind them 21 times for 155 yards and two TDs.

Daniels reworked the offense before the season by moving players. Sharp shifted from QB to running back. Junior Trevor Moore (5-10, 175) moved from fullback to receiver because "he's got the best hands on the team," Daniels says. Junior QB Ryan Watson (5-10, 185) transferred from a St. Louis Missouri 5A school to take Sharp's spot. Daniels says he "runs the option like a pro."

Daniels says the Westside community hungered for a winning football. He says the players, other students, parents and supporters are "like a family." Before the 3:00 p.m. bus departure for Salem, a woman who lives near the school prepared a meal for the entire traveling party. ... Junior offensive guard Ryan Simpson (6-2, 265) gets his first start Week 3 vs. Hoxie after missing the entire preseason and the first two games. He broke his foot at the Princeton football camp in late summer. The bone hasn't completely healed, but Daniels says Simpson was fitted with a support device at the prosthetic business where his father works and will be at full speed this week. ... Daniels says Hoxie runs a lot of double handoffs in its double-wing look on offense.

Westside notches scrimmage win over Rector
August 21, 2006

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

JONESBORO - The Jonesboro Westside Warriors hope that Monday night was an indication of things to come for the 2006 season. The Warriors posted a 28-7 win over the Rector Cougars in a preseason scrimmage here Monday night.

Warrior quarterback Jacob Sharp completed 6 of 8 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for two more touchdowns in the win.

Sharp's first touchdown pass came with 10:42 left in the opening quarter. He connected with Jonathon Edwards for 50 yards. Edwards kicked all of Westside's extra points in the game, making the score 7-0.

Edwards recovered a Rector fumble on the Cougars' first play from scrimmage to set up Westside's next score. Two plays later, Sharp sprinted in from 32 yards away, making the score 14-0.

Sharp ran in his second touchdown with 2:37 left in the half on a 2-yard quarterback sneak.

After holding the Cougars to a quick three-and-out, Westside scored its final touchdown with 1:19 left in the half. Sharp connected with Edwards again, this time for 56 yards, to make the score 28-0.

Rector scored its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run by Daniel Hester. Hester also kicked the PAT to set the final score.

"We saw some good things on both offense and defense," said Westside Head Coach Bryan Harris. "Our defense probably played as good as they have since I have been here. Except for the one drive where they (Rector) scored, our defense controlled the game."

"On offense I thought we ran the ball hard," continued Harris. "Our receivers got open and made some good catches. Even our second unit ran the ball hard. Our O-line did a good job of creating space for our backs to run. I was very pleased with our effort."

Westside opens its season on the road next Friday against the Batesville Southside Southerners who are playing their first year of varsity football. Rector begins its season the same night, travelling to face the rival Corning Bobcats.
