Car wreck derails Marked Tree
September 12, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

MARKED TREE - Marked Tree lost at Harrisburg for its only regular-season setback of 2006. Avenging that loss got more difficult.

Marked Tree (2-0) starting tight end/free safety Nathan Ivy and all-conference guard and deep-snapper Clint Hawkins likely will miss three weeks or more after an in-town car wreck. Ivy injured his back and Hawkins his knee. They were in the car with another football player when their vehicle straightened a curve and rolled over, Marked Tree coach Tim Branum says. “All of them were wearing seatbelts or it would have been a real disaster,” Branum says. “We're glad they're OK. The sad part is that Ivy has worked hard all his life and he was finally starting. This was his year.”

While Marked Tree loses starters, Harrisburg senior RB Brandon Versie returned Week 2 in the 20-20 tie with Highland, rushing 24 times for 173 yards and a TD.

Carlisle rallies by Marked Tree
November 16, 2002

MARKED TREE — The Carlisle Bison came from behind twice and made a game-winning defensive stand late in the fourth quarter to beat Marked Tree 26-21 Friday night in the Class AA state football playoffs.

Carlisle held the Indians, the top seed from the 3AA conference, at their own 7-yard-line with 2:31 left in the game to preserve the win.

Carlisle (8-3), the fourth-place team from the 6AA, won despite giving up 306 rushing yards to Marked Tree’s Anquion Williams.

Quarterback Matt Campbell scored what would prove to be the winning touchdown for Carlisle on the third play of the final period. Campbell sneaked in from two yards away to set the final score, 26-21.

Marked Tree (9-2) drove as far as the Bison 7 in its final possession, but was stopped four yards short on fourth-and-9 from the 12.

“They were just tough,” Carlisle coach James Clayton said. “They were determined to line up and play. They were in this game to the end.

“We have some excellent running backs in our conference, but that number 34 (Williams) is the best we have seen all year long.”

Williams’ total came on 29 carries. Cody Simpson got 141 yards on the same number of carries for Carlisle.

“He kept us in the ballgame,” Marked Tree coach Tim Branum said of Williams. “He’s been doing it all year.

“There’s always missed opportunities. Long yardage penalties killed two or three of our drives.”

Carlisle will go on to face the Mount Ida Lions in the second round of the playoffs.

The Bison scored first in what would be a busy first quarter. Brandon Waddell recovered an Indian fumble at the Marked Tree 45 . Three plays later, Simpson scored his first of three touchdowns with 6:24 showing on the clock. Simpson’s 5-yard run gave Carlisle the early lead, 6-0.

Marked Tree answered on its next possession. The Indians started the drive from their own 36. Only three plays later, Williams ran in a touchdown from 57 yards out. With 4:53 left in the first quarter, Fernando Zavala gave the Indians the 7-6 lead with his PAT.

Carlisle followed on its next possession with another touchdown from Simpson, this time from 12 yards away. Campbell ran in the two-point conversion with 2:12 left in the period to give the lead back to the Bison, 14-7.

Marked Tree counter-punched again. Kelsey Snow capped an eight-play, 64-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Zavala’s kick tied the score at 14-14, where it would remain at halftime.

Carlisle used almost seven minutes of the third quarter to score its next touchdown. Simpson got his final TD on a 10-yard run with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Carlisle missed its second PAT to leave the score, 20-14.

Williams broke another long touchdown for Marked Tree to reclaim the lead for the Indians. With 2:21 left in the quarter, Williams ran in a 52-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 21-20.
