November 6, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - A streak continues, history is made, and droughts end as the brackets are set for the 2007 high school football state playoffs.

The longest continuing playoff streak belongs to Newport (10-0, 7-0, 1st seed in 2-4A). The Greyhounds are going to the postseason for the 21st consecutive time.

Springdale Har-Ber (8-2, 6-1, 1st seed in 7A West), Valley View (7-3, 4-3, 4th seed in 3-4A) and Cave City (6-4, 3-4, 5th seed in 2-3A) are making their first playoff appearances in their second year of varsity football.

Centerpoint (5-5, 4-3, 4th seed in 7-3A) will make the first playoff trip in the school's 11-year history. Centerpoint resulted from the consolidation of Glenwood and Amity (a non-football playing school). Glenwood made the playoffs three times in 40 years, the last time in 1990.

England (4-6, 3-4, 4th seed in 8-3A) is making its first appearance since 1995. Nettleton makes back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 1996-97. Helena-West Helena's (5-5, 4-3 in 5A Southeast) 3rd seed is its highest since 1984.

Nic Schaff ran in from 13 yards out and Matt Johnson kicked the point after to make the score 7-0.

Allison scored the next two Raider touchdowns. He scored on a 4-yard run with 7:13 left in the half, and on an 11-yard run with 4:52 remaining before intermission. Johnson's kicks were good both times and Nettleton led 21-0 at the break.

JONESBORO - The Valley View Blazers capitalized on turnovers and methodically controlled the junior varsity Nettleton Raiders Monday night, only allowing one touchdown in the closing seconds and winning the game 20-8. The victory marked the fourth straight for the Blazers.

Valley View (4-1) scored its first touchdown with 3:34 remaining in the half. Adam Cloinger recovered a Nettleton fumble at the Raider 7-yard line. Three plays later, Austin Byrd scored on a 3-yard run and then kicked the extra point to give the Blazers a 7-0 halftime lead.

Another Blazer fumble recovery, this time by Chase Cooper, started the next Valley View scoring drive. Quarterback Kevin Burgi capped an 8 play, 46 yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:39 left in the third quarter. The extra point was mishandled, and the score remained 13-0.

Late in the game, Nettleton (0-2) turned the ball over on downs at the Valley View 4-yard line. The Blazers went 96 yards in only 8 plays and finished the drive with a 55 yard touchdown sprint by Iain Bailey. Byrd's kick made the score 20-0 with 1:39 left to play.

The Raiders averted the shutout when Josh Wiley passed a 50 yard touchdown to Matt Akers with 54 seconds remaining in the game. Akers ran in the two-point conversion to set the final score.

"We're getting better," said Valley View Coach Randy Coleman. "Win or lose, it's good for us to play good schools like Nettleton. It helps us get better. And it's good to win those games.

Valley View travels to Paragould next Monday to face the junior varsity Rams.

Jonesboro, Nettleton battle to preseason tie
August 23, 2005

By David Grim

JONESBORO - Big yardage plays were abundant as the Jonesboro Hurricane and the Nettleton Raiders fought to a 21-21 tie in a preseason scrimmage at Arkansas State University Tuesday night.

The Hurricane, 5-5 last year, got on the board first after Cody Pace intercepted a Nettleton pass on the Raiders' second play from scrimmage. 13 plays and 64 yards later, Jonesboro scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Bennett to Carter Harbuck. The extra point attempt missed and the Hurricane led 6-0.

The Raiders, coming off a 1-8-1 record last season, took the lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Seth Allison dove over from a yard away. Matt Johnson kicked the Raiders into the lead, 7-6.

Jonesboro's Eddie Price recovered a Nettleton fumble midway through the second quarter to set up the Hurricane's next score. After a drive of 10 plays and 43 yards, Bennett scored on a three yard quarterback keeper. Bennett, injured on the touchdown play, was replaced by Delta Cleary. Cleary called his own number for the two-point conversion and put the Hurricane up 14-7 with 2:10 left in the half.

The big yardage plays began there, as there would not be a touchdown play that went for less than 80 yards the for remainder of the game. The Raiders followed the Jonesboro touchdown by scoring on their next play from scrimmage. Allison passed to Nic Schaaf for an 80 yard touchdown. Johnson set the halftime score with his extra point.

The Hurricane continued the big play trend as soon as play resumed. Pace returned the opening kickoff of the second half 95 yards for a touchdown. John Miller kicked the extra point and gave the Hurricane a 21-14 lead.

After a three-and-out possession, the Raiders were forced to punt. Jonesboro began another methodical drive of 53 yards on 10 plays. That's when, with 3:09 left in the third quarter, Nettleton brought the drive to a dramatic halt. Schaaf intercepted a Hurricane pass from a yard deep in his own end-zone and returned it 101 yards for a Raider touchdown. Johnson set what would be the final score with another accurate extra point attempt.

Jonesboro had one more chance to take the lead late in the game. The Hurricane began its last possession on its own 19-yard line and drove to the Raider 43. As time was running out, Jonesboro attempted a pass that would secure the victory, but Schaaf came up with another interception at the Nettleton two-yard line to preserve the tie.

"We've changed our offense this season," said Jonesboro head coach Jim DeVazier. "We are going through some growing pains with this new offense. We've still got to work some things out, but we'll get better. I think this (game) will help us get better."

"Our guys battled the whole game," said Nettleton head coach Donnie Tennison, "and that's what I asked them to do. I told them that we would be looking for 11 guys that would battle for us and that do what we ask them to do. I think we saw what our guys could do tonight. I'm proud of the effort they gave."

Schaaf tallied 197 all purpose yards for the Raiders on the ground, in the air and on returns. Bennett completed 6 of 8 passes for 68 yards before leaving the game.

The Hurricane will begin its season on Friday, September 2, at home against Camden Fairview. Nettleton will launch its season the same night, hosting the Trumann Wildcats.

Nettleton jumps Pocahontas in scrimmage, 29-15
August 27, 2004

By David Grim

JONESBORO - The Nettleton Raiders looked like a well oiled machine at times Friday night. The Raiders dismantled the Pocahontas Redskins in a four-quarter scrimmage at ASU's Indian Stadium, winning 29-15.

The Raiders struck first with 2:35 remaining in the opening quarter. Senior quarterback Nick Holley scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a one yard plunge into the end zone. Cooper Holmes kicked the PAT to make the score 7-0.

The Redskins tied the score early in the second quarter. Senior running back Eric Dunham ran in from 13 yards away, and the successful PAT made the score 7-7.

Holley notched his second TD on a four yard run with 5:44 left in the half. The score remained 13-7 after a missed extra point attempt.

After a Nettleton interception on the next Redskin possesion, senior receiver Dennis Virgies took a handoff and ran 28 yards for the score. Nic Schaaf ran in the two point conversion to give the Raiders a 21-7 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Pocahontas closed to within six points on a 17 yard run from sophomore quarterback Justin Bennett. Jesse Meeks gave the Redskins two more points to make the score 21-15 with 7:33 remaining in the game.

Nettleton answered on their next play from scrimmage. Holley passed 80 yards to Virgies, and Jessie Murphy chalked up two more points to set the final score.

Holley completed six of seven passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. Virgies caught two passes for 94 yards and ran for another 49 yards on five carries. Derick Lawson led the Raider rushing attack with 68 yards on seven carries.

"He (Virgies) is a diamond in the rough," said Nettleton's first year head coach Donnie Tennison. "He's probably the best athlete on this team, but he hasn't had as much experience. We are going to rely on him to score a lot of points for us this year."

Meeks led all rushers with 85 yards on 12 carries for the Redskins.

"We were out classed tonight," said Pocahontas head coach Dave Williams. "They beat us up one side and down the other. They just knocked our socks off. We'll take this and learn from it and get better."

Both teams open their seasons next week on the road with Nettleton traveling to Trumann, and Pocahontas playing at Jonesboro Westside.

JONESBORO - The Vilonia Eagles scored early and often en route to a 37-0 AAAA East victory over the Nettleton Raiders here Friday night.

Vilonia (5-1, 2-1) wasted no time in taking control. The Eagles forced the Raiders (2-4, 0-3) to punt on their opening possesion. Carl Clites blocked it and the Eagles recovered on the Raiders' one yard line. Eagle quarterback Nick Cowger dove in on the next play, and Scott Brooks kicked the score to 7-0.

Vilonia scored its next touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Josh McEntire made it 14-0 on an eight yard touchdown run with 11:54 left in the second quarter.

Brooks kicked a 33 yard field goal to make it 17-0, and the Eagles scored on their next drive on a 22 yard pass from Cowger to Matt Stewart. Nettleton blocked the PAT and the halftime score was 23-0.

Cowger scored again to start the third quarter on a 45 yard naked bootleg with 11:24 showing on the clock.

Seth Wright wrapped up the scoring on a five yard touchdown with 1:44 left in the third stanza.

"We played really good team defense," said Vilonia head coach Jim Stanley. "We worked hard all week and played hard tonight. I'm really proud of them. This was a big game for us."

"Obviously they dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage," said Nettleton head coach Darrel Dover. "Three yards and a cloud of dust doesn't work when you don't block anybody."

McEntire led all rushers with 102 yards on nine carries.

Vilonia plays host to Marion next week. Nettleton, still trying to pick up their first conference victory in two years, travels to Greene County Tech.
