State playoff notes
November 6, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - A streak continues, history is made, and droughts end as the brackets are set for the 2007 high school football state playoffs.

The longest continuing playoff streak belongs to Newport (10-0, 7-0, 1st seed in 2-4A). The Greyhounds are going to the postseason for the 21st consecutive time.

Springdale Har-Ber (8-2, 6-1, 1st seed in 7A West), Valley View (7-3, 4-3, 4th seed in 3-4A) and Cave City (6-4, 3-4, 5th seed in 2-3A) are making their first playoff appearances in their second year of varsity football.

Centerpoint (5-5, 4-3, 4th seed in 7-3A) will make the first playoff trip in the school's 11-year history. Centerpoint resulted from the consolidation of Glenwood and Amity (a non-football playing school). Glenwood made the playoffs three times in 40 years, the last time in 1990.

England (4-6, 3-4, 4th seed in 8-3A) is making its first appearance since 1995. Nettleton makes back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since 1996-97. Helena-West Helena's (5-5, 4-3 in 5A Southeast) 3rd seed is its highest since 1984.

Greyhound returns from major injury

NEWPORT - Beating Lonoke would guarantee Newport (9-0, 6-0 in 2-4A) gets one of its best players back for a playoff game. Winning the conference title would give the Greyhounds a first-round playoff bye.

By week 12 senior wide receiver/cornerback Quarmaine Dean (6-1, 165) will return for the first time since breaking his collarbone in week 4 against Marianna Lee. The broken bone pierced through the skin near the neck. Doctors said it was within an inch of hitting a major artery.

Newport runs by Pocahontas 56-9
August 30, 2007

By David Wallace
Hootens.com

JONESBORO - Newport senior running back Nico Cox rocketed to 214 yards, including scoring runs of 26 and 84 yards Thursday night in the Greyhounds' 56-9 mauling of Pocahontas at Indian Stadium in Jonesboro. The game was the last of six during Simmons First/Hootens.com Kickoff week.

Cox, a Sonic Super Team selection, rushed for 1,600-plus rushing yards a year ago.

Cox's 84-yard dash was the most sparkling play of the night but came late against the Redskins' second-team defense. He shot over the right side untouched to put Newport up 43-9 with 7:49 left.

Newport coach Greg Brannon says Cox's big night came with the deck stacked against him. "I thought (Pocahontas) keyed on Nico all night," Brannon says. "When we ran the option to the tight end side, they covered Nico and left our quarterback (Edward Pruitt) wide open. They just overloaded our strong side, and it hurt them."

Pruitt, a returning starter, rushed five times for 52 yards and two TDs and completed two of five passes for 98 yards and another score. The senior's 48-yard strike to 6-4 senior Clyde Dean with 9:43 to go in the second quarter gave the Greyhounds a 13-2 lead and started the rout. Newport averaged 8.2 yards per play in amassing 426 yards offense. Brannon was at least as impressed with his defense, which limited a potent Redskin attack to 82 yards.

"We felt good about them after we played that scrimmage game against Wynne," Brannon says. "We played well then, our assignments were fine, we just had a few things to straighten out."

Newport senior corner Quarmaine Dean blanketed Pocahontas receivers, breaking up four passes. Sophomore linebacker Thamail Morgan made five tackles, forced a fumble, broke up a pass, partially blocked a punt and collected two sacks. "I hate to single anybody out because our whole defense played good," Brannon says.

Pocahontas' first score came in the first quarter when Pruitt pitched wildly to Cox on the option deep on the Newport end, and the ball rolled through the corner of the end zone for a safety to make it 7-2. The Redskins started the third quarter with a 77-yard drive that consumed 7:02, ending in senior QB Craig Green finding senior running back Tim Sullivan with a 3-yard TD pass to make it 21-9.

The Newport Greyhounds scored 19 fourth quarter points, but it wasn't enough as the Batesville Pioneers win the "White River Bowl," 31-26.

Batesville (2-1) scored first on a 15-yard touchdown run from Tim Hughes with 7:53 left in the opening quarter. Nick Reynolds made the score 7-0 with his extra point.

Reynolds made it 10-0 on a 22-yard field goal with 4:26 left in the half.

Newport (0-3) got on the scoreboard with 3:17 left before intermission. Nico Cox hurled a halfback pass 52 yards to Quarmaine Dean for a touchdown. Derrick Watkins made it a three point difference with his extra point.

Batesville surged in the third quarter. Ronnie Hughes scored with 7:23 left in the period and added a two-point conversion to make the score 18-7.

Pioneer quarterback Cody Aycock ran in a 17-yard quarterback keeper with 1:10 left in the third and Reynolds' PAT made it 25-7.

Batesville's last touchdown came early in the fourth quarter when Ronnie Hughes made it 31-7 on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Newport refused to lie down. The Greyhounds rattled off 19 unanswered points.

Cox ran in the next two touchdowns from 27 and 59 yards away respectively. With 6:47 left in the game, Batesville's lead had been cut, 31-20.

L.T. Tolerson scored the final Greyhound touchdown with 1:13 left in the game to set what would be the final score.

An onside kick attempt failed and the Pioneers ran out the clock to end the game.

Cox led all rushers with 221 yards on 17 carries.

Pocahontas holds of Newport; reclaims conference lead
October 28, 2005

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

POCAHONTAS - The Pocahontas Redskins defense held the Newport Greyhounds to just 80 second half yards, and held on to win 25-21 in a key 2AAA Conference game. Justin Bennett caught two touchdown passes for the Redskins and returned a kickoff for another.

The victory gives the Redskins (8-1, 5-1) a share of the conference lead with Newport (5-4, 5-1). Hoxie's conference record fell to 4-2 with a loss to Highland, 28-7. Pocahontas holds the tie-breaker over both Highland and Newport by virtue of defeating both teams.

Pocahontas scored on its second play of the game. Michael Creason threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Bennett. Ryan Broyles kicked the score to 7-0.

Newport answered with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Kristin Braxton to Clyde Dean. Cam Cantrell's foot tied the game at 7-7 with 7:55 left in the opening quarter.

Broyles gave the Redskins a 10-7 lead with a 23-yard field goal, but Newport took the lead on its first play from scrimmage after the field goal. Quentin Alcorn sprinted 63 yards for a touchdown with 4:40 left in the first quarter. Cantrell's kick made the score 14-10.

Creason connected with Bennett again with just 1:15 left in the half, this time for 71 yards. Chase Cissell conver ted the two-point try to give the Redskins an 18-14 halftime lead.

The Greyhounds got the ball to start the second half and drove 65 yards in 8 plays. Alcorn capped the drive on a 5-yard touchdown run with 7:58 remaining in the third quarter. Cantrell's extra point gave Newport the lead, 21-18.

Pocahontas reclaimed the lead on the ensuing kickoff. Bennett returned the kick 81 yards to set what would be the final score, 25-21.

"The whole town wrote us off," said Pocahontas Coach David Williams. "These kids never gave up. We've lost three or four great players to injury, but our kids persevered."

Alcorn led all rushers with 178 yards on 30 carries. Tim Sullivan led the Redskin ground game with 83 yards on 13 carries. Bennett's two catches both went for touchdowns, totaling 128 yards.

Osceola was scheduled to play at Newport on Friday in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs.

Piggott, which finished fourth in conference play and was scheduled to open at Pocahontas, will now play at Newport. East Poinsett County, which tied for fourth place in the 3AAA Conference, will travel to Pocahontas.

Pocahontas destroys Newport, 43-22, earns top seed from 2AAA
October 31, 2003

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

POCAHONTAS - Pocahontas junior quarterback Andrew Bell completed 8 of 18 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns as the Redskins dominated the Newport Greyhounds, 43-22, in a 2AAA Conference showdown here Friday night.

Bell put the Redskins (9-0, 6-0) on the board first with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Kyle Wren with 8:24 left in the opening quarter. Pocahontas faked the PAT when holder Kent Winslow jumped up and ran in for the two point conversion, making the score 8-0.

Bell's next touchdown pass was a 41 yard strike to Winslow with 3:40 left in the first quarter. Coty Cox, kicking a perfect five of five extra points, made the score 15-0.

Pocahontas fullback Eric Dunham ran in the next Redskin touchdown from three yards out early in the second quarter, and then caught a 38 yard touchdown pass from Bell on the following possesion to make the score 29-0 before Newport (6-3, 5-1) ever scored a point.

Newport's first touchdown came with 3:57 left in the half. Quinten Alcorn ran in a 10 yard touchdown and quarterback Trey Metzger added two more points to make it 29-8.

Bell found Wren one more time before intermission, this time on a 69 yard screen play, to make the score 36-8 at halftime.

Bell scored the final Redskin touchdown himself with 6:11 left in the third quarter. Bell ran in from two yards away to envoke the "mercy rule" on the Greyhounds.

Newport scored two more touchdowns after the rule took effect. Fred Brown scored on a 13 yard run late in the third quarter, and Metzger passed 15 yards to Will Scoggins in the fourth to set the final score.

"We didn't know if we'd be ready for this game," said Pocahontas coach Dave Williams. "We had a couple starters out. But our kids did a fine job. We did what we had to do."

With the win, Pocahontas takes sole possesion of the 2AAA Conference lead, and clinches the top seed from that conference in the Class AAA playoffs. The Redskins travel to Heber Springs next week to try and complete their first undefeated regular season since 1993.
