"This is why we play on Monday nights," said Paragould head coach Brian Carter. "These kids know that they are just a snap away from playing on Friday nights, so it's good that we play these games to see how they look."

"I think Coach Doke has done a great job with his team," continued Carter. "They are just getting that program started and those guys look well coached."

Manila head coach Toby Doke was pleased with his team's effort. "They battled pretty well in a hard fought game with a 5A team," said Doke. "Except for a scrimmage a few weeks ago and a couple possessions at Marked Tree, this is the first time our guys have gotten to play a real game. We made some mistakes that we'll have to correct, but overall I am happy with how well they performed."

Manila's next test will be at Nettleton when the Lions face the JV Raiders next Monday night.

Paragould (1-4-1, 0-3) held Nettleton (3-3, 1-3) without a first down on the Raiders' first two possessions. Nettleton began its third drive after Cooper Holmes intercepted an errant Ram pass at the Raider 30-yard line and returned it 11 yards to the 41. 59 yards and 10 plays later, Nettleton found the end-zone on the first play of the second quarter. Nic Schaff ran in from 13 yards out and Matt Johnson kicked the point after to make the score 7-0.

Allison scored the next two Raider touchdowns. He scored on a 4-yard run with 7:13 left in the half, and on an 11-yard run with 4:52 remaining before intermission. Johnson's kicks were good both times and Nettleton led 21-0 at the break.

Valley View clips JV Rams, continues streak
September 26, 2005

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

PARAGOULD - The Valley View Blazers extended their winning streak to five games, handling the junior varsity Paragould Rams 10-6 at Ram Stadium Monday night.

The Blazers (5-1) scored the only points of the first half when Austin Byrd kicked a 28-yard field goal late in the first quarter.

The score remained 3-0 until the fourth quarter. That's when Kevin Burgi hit Blake Kennedy with a 9-yard touchdown pass. Byrd's extra point made the score 10-0 with 6:59 left in the game.

The Rams (1-2) attempted to rally as the game neared its end. Christian Moore sprinted 54 yards down to the Valley View 4-yard line, and Andrew Weaver poked it in for the Rams on the next play. Valley View's Josh Snow blocked the extra point, and the Blazers led 10-6 with 2:45 left to play.

The Rams tried to keep the rally alive on the ensuing kickoff by attempting an on-side kick, but the ball failed to travel the required 10 yards. Valley View preserved the win.

"This is typical of what we have been doing all year," said Valley View Coach Randy Coleman. "We have opportunities to score in the first half and we don't do it."

"If we want to compete in the conference we are going to be in next year," continued Coleman, "then we have to score on every opportunity. We're going to have to work on this. It's still good to win, though."

Burgi led the Valley View running game with 74 yards on 10 carries.

The Blazers travel across town to play Nettleton next Monday night. Valley View won the previous meeting last week, 20-8.

PARAGOULD - The defending Class AAAA state champion Batesville Pioneers extended their winning streak to 17 games, and their unbeaten streak to 19 games with a 14-7 AAAA East conference win over the Paragould Rams Friday night at Harmon Field.

Batesville (5-0, 2-0) started its opening drive on the 44 yard line and drove 56 yards in 15 plays. Senior running back Tim Childress capped the drive on a three yard touchdown run with 7:00 left in the first quarter. Mason Reeves kicked the PAT to make the score 7-0.

Childress scored again on the Pioneers' next possession. Childress sprinted 47 yards to the end zone with 3:48 left in the opening period. Reeves set what would be the halftime score at 14-0 with his extra point kick.

Paragould (2-3, 0-2) controlled the ball for all but six plays of the third quarter, but could not come up with any points. The Rams started the second half from the 33 yard line and drove all the way to the Batesville two yard line in 18 plays before turning the ball over on downs.

After holding the Pioneers to a three and out possession, Paragould took over again. The Rams drove as far as the Batesville 32 yard line before the Pioneers halted the drive with an interception.

Turnovers marred the fourth quarter as Batesville fumbled twice and threw an interception, while Paragould succumbed to a fumble and an interception.

The Rams got on the scoreboard with 12 seconds remaining in the game. Quarterback Chris Stidham threw a 74 yard touchdown pass to Seth Mitchell, and Shawn Brummett kicked the extra point to bring the Rams to within seven points. An onside kick attempt by Paragould failed.

Childress gained 137 yards on 24 carries for the Pioneers. Tyler Garmrath led the Paragould ground game with 68 yards on 18 carries.

The Pioneers' last loss came against Sylvan Hills on November 15, 2002, in the second round of the state playoffs.

Completion of new Paragould field off target
August 25, 2004

PARAGOULD - Bankruptcy. Torrential downpours. These two elements have all but guaranteed that the 2004 Paragould Rams will not get to play a down on their new football field this season.

After some initial dirt work that was done in the winter, SRI Sports, Inc. was due to begin the project in late February 2004. SRI, the second largest track and turf company in the United States, has been responsible for many large stadium projects, including the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, LA.

Just before the work was to have begun, SRI Sports declared bankruptcy. The initial funds PHS put up to pay for the work were tied up in the bankruptcy procedure until just recently.

During the summer, some more of the work was independently contracted, but a far wetter than normal summer hampered the efforts of the work crews.

The new contractor, Charlie Meeks of Florida, officially took over the project this week. Meeks has the turf for the field on its way from Europe by boat.

"We were hoping to have the field done in time to play our last two ball games on it," said Paragould athletic director Dale Schenk. "If I were a betting man, I'd say that's not going to happen. We will be playing this year's games at Harmon Field"

Schenk also dismissed rumors that the Paragould soccer team would not be using the new facility. "This field has been designed from the beginning to be wide enough to be a regualtion soccer field," said Schenk.

After completion of the stadium, the only Paragould sports that will still be played off campus will be golf, swimming and bowling.

PARAGOULD - The Paragould Rams scored 21 of their 28 points in the first half, en route to a 28-6 victory over the visiting Beebe Badgers. It was the AAAA-East opener for both teams.

The Rams (3-1, 1-0) got their first score on a four yard run from quarterback Zach Noel. Alex Brummett kicked his first of four PAT's to make it 7-0.

Running back Seth Mitchell scored next for the Rams on a 17 yard sprint to the end zone, giving the Paragould a 14-0 lead.

Beebe defensive back Justin Payne recovered a Ram fumble at the Paragould 49 to set up the Badgers' only score. Quarterback Jake McIlwain connected with Nick Taylor for 14 yard touchdown with 1:10 left in the half. Beebe (1-3, 0-1) missed the PAT, leaving the score 14-6.

The Rams made the most of the time left before intermission. Paragould marched 66 yards in eight plays, and capped the drive with a 15 yard toss from Noel to Mitchell, setting the halftime score at 21-6.

Paragould's last touchdown came on the opening drive of the second half. The Rams launched a time consuming 87 yard drive on 16 plays. Noel scored from the one yard line with 3:28 left in the third quarter.

Beebe would threaten to score in the fourth quarter. The Badgers used the remainder of the third stanza to drive 61 yards to the Paragould four, before stalling out with 10:29 left in the game.

"We did something we hadn't been doing all year," said Paragould head coach Brian Carter. "Our offensive line did a really good job protecting our quaterback so we could run our offense."

Mitchell led the Rams ground game, rushing 12 times for 101 yards. McIlwain completed 9 of 22 Badger passes for 102 yards.

Paragould clips rival GCT
November 9, 2002

PARAGOULD — Rams vs. Eagles. An NFL Monday Night Football matchup? No. Friday night football in Greene County. Or, more specifically, the annual “Battle of the Ridge” between the Paragould Rams and the Greene County Tech Eagles.

Paragould took the bell trophy back from the Eagles Friday night as Garret Burkhart’s 27-yard field goal for the Rams in the third quarter proved to be the difference in Paragould’s 17-14 win. Zach Noel’s 8-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter rallied the Rams from a 14-10 deficit and set the final.

Seth Mitchell started the scoring for the Rams (4-6, 3-4 AAAA-East). With 41 seconds on the clock in the first quarter, Mitchell picked off an Eagle pass and ran it in 19 yards for the touchdown. Burkhart kicked the score to 7-0.

Late in the second quarter, Greene County Tech defensive back Robert Baker intercepted a Ram pass at the Eagle 37. GCT (4-6, 2-5 AAAA-East) then put together a 10-play, 63-yard drive to tie the score. Baker was rewarded for the pick when he capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.

Paragould got the ball at its own 25 to start the second half. The Rams took almost eight minutes of the period to drive to the Eagle 10. Burkhart then put what would be the winning margin on the scoreboard to make it 10-7.

GCT struck back immediately. On third down and 13 yards to go at their own 26, Drew Kellums threw a 71-yard strike to Yong B. Ko to set up a first-and-goal at the Ram 3. Justin Hart scored from that distance on the next play to make it a 14-10 lead for the Eagles late in the third quarter.

Paragould scored its final touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter and held the Eagles defensively for the remaining 11:54. Noel ran in from 8 yards out to set the final score.

“This is always a special victory for us,” said Paragould coach Brian Carter of the crosstown rivalry. “We really sucked it up in the second half to win this one. Our offensive line just dominated the game.”

Mitchell, a sophomore, led the Rams with 124 yards on 22 carries.

“It was just a whippin’ in the second half,” said GCT coach Pip Runyan. “They lined up and took it right at us the entire half. Their line ran right over us.”

A victory for Greene County Tech would have given the Eagles an outside shot at the postseason with help from some other teams. There was nothing but pride and the bell trophy on the line for Paragould, which avenged an early-season 14-0 defeat to the Eagles.

McCoy runs Batesville by Paragould
October 26, 2002

PARAGOULD — Batesville tailback Antonio McCoy rushed for three touchdowns to help his Pioneers to a 41-14 victory over the Paragould Rams.

“It’s the greatest feeling in the world,” McCoy said. “I’ve never scored three in one game before. I owe it all to the offensive line.”

Center Josh Gamel (6-5, 349) and guard Ben Dobbs (6-5, 307) created enough holes for McCoy to gain 127 yards on 12 carries.

Batesville (5-3, 3-2 AAAA-East) scored on its first play from scrimmage when Kyle Francis found Cornelius Strickland on a 63-yard pass for a touchdown.

Paragould (2-6, 1-4 AAAA-East) looked to make a game of it early. The Rams marched 70 yards in seven plays on their first possession. Seth Mitchell capped the drive on a 1-yard run to tie the score, 7-7.

Batesville came right back at the Rams on its next drive. With 5:17 left in the opening quarter, Tim Childress finished a 65-yard drive on the seventh play with a 4-yard touchdown run. The Pioneers took the lead for good, 14-7.

McCoy took over from there for the Pioneers. He scored two of his three TDs in the second quarter on runs of 29 and 18 yards. Batesville led 28-7 at halftime.

McCoy picked up where he left off in the third quarter. With 10:54 left in the third quarter, McCoy ran in his third touchdown from 2 yards.

Childress got back into the act late in the third period when he scored on another 1-yard touchdown to make it 41-7.

Paragould got its final points with 9:02 left in the game. Aaron Sowards scored on a 1-yard run to set the final score at 41-14.

“I thought we looked very good offensively,” said Batesville coach Dave King. “They (Paragould) were driving us the first couple of series, but after that our defense looked really good too. It was just an outstanding effort.”

Francis put up some good numbers for Batesville, completing 11-of-17 passes for 202 yards and the first Pioneer touchdown.

This was an important game for both teams to stay alive in the playoff hunt. “We’d like to think we are still in it,” said Paragould coach Brian Carter. “Winning our last two games might get us in there.”

“They were just an explosive team,” Carter said of the Pioneers. “They ran the ball well, threw the ball well. They are a really good football team.”

Vilonia cruises past Paragould

PARAGOULD — Sophomore running back Jake Gotcher scored a pair of touchdowns Friday night to lead the Vilonia Eagles to a 45-14 victory over the Paragould Rams in AAAA-East conference football.

The Rams scored on their first drive. Quarterback Andy Schatzley ran in from 62 yards away to give Paragould (1-4, 0-2 AAAA-East) the 7-0 lead. The Eagles countered on their opening drive with a 1-yard run from Cory Mize and the Rams would never lead again.

Vilonia (4-1, 2-0 AAAA-East) did all the scoring in the second quarter.
Gotcher got his first touchdown on a 6-yard run with seven minutes left on the clock. With 3:50 left in the half, Eagle quarterback Michael Cummings hooked up with Dustin Shaw on a 5-yard touchdown pass.

Vilonia added a 29-yard field goal off the foot of Caleb Shock as time expired, taking a 24-7 halftime lead.

The Rams looked like they would make a game of it in the third quarter, holding Vilonia on both of their third-quarter possessions. On Vilonia’s first possession of the half, Paragould foiled an Eagle fake punt and took over at their own 41.

After getting stopped for a 4-yard loss on the first play, Garrett Burkhart caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Schatzley to close within 10 of the Eagles, 24-14.

Vilonia shut the Ram offense down in the final quarter, forcing three punts, recovering a Paragould fumble and making a big fourth-down sack. Gotcher, Nick Cowger and Kyle Salmon all scored rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game well out of reach.

Shaw led Vilonia with 153 yards on 22 carries. Schatzley was Paragould’s leading rusher with 89 yards on five carries.

Vilonia will host Nettleton next Friday night while Paragould will stay at home to face Marion.
