Osceola rolls into
playoffs By David Grim OSCEOLA - Elroy Brown rushed for 171 yards on 17 carries and scored 4
touchdowns as the Osceola Seminoles rolled over the Rivercrest Colts,
44-7. The win gives the Seminoles the number 2 seed from the 3AAAA
conference in the playoffs. Three of Brown's four touchdowns came in the first quarter. Brown ran
in from 14, 37 and 39 yards away respectively, with the third coming with
:30 left in the opening stanza. Dustin Freeman threw a two-point
conversion pass to Roy Pugh on the third touchdown to make the score
20-0. Osceola (6-4, 5-2) scored its last touchdown of the first half on a
56-yard touchdown pass from Freeman to Cameron Baker, making the score
26-0. Rivercrest (3-7, 3-4) got its only score with 5:20 left in the half.
Josh Flemming threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Marlon Tramble. Fleming
made it 26-7 with the extra point. Brown's fourth touchdown made the score 32-7 on a 4-yard run with 8:46
left in the third quarter. Cameron Seals got a 25-yard touchdown with 5:05 left in the third
period to make it 38-7. Osceola's last score came with :56 left to play. Brandon Golden scored
on a 1-yard run to set the final score. In addition to Brown's 171 yards, Seals added 97 yards on 9 carries.
The tandem accounted for 268 of the Seminoles' 448 yards of total offense.
363 of those yards were on the ground. Gosnell rallies, beats Colts
36-35 By David Grim GOSNELL - The Gosnell Pirates were playing catch-up football all night
long, but they caught up when it mattered, beating the Rivercrest Colts
36-35 Friday night in 3AAAA conference play. Gosnell (6-1, 3-1) trailed 35-28 late in the first quarter. With 2:05
left to play Jevon Smith ran in a 19-yard touchdown for the Pirates,
making the score 35-34. Gosnell was attempting two-point conversions all
night because their place kicker, Hunter Hughes, was out of the lineup
with a broken arm. The first two-point try failed, but was called back on
a pass interference penalty. On the second try, Gosnell took the lead and
the game on the feet of Tyler George. Rivercrest (1-6, 1-3) still had one more try to reclaim the lead, but
George intercepted a pass at the Gosnell 25-yard line to ice the game. Gosnell scored first and made the score 6-0 on a 1-yard run from Clint
McHan with 43 seconds left in the opening quarter. Rivercrest answered early in the second quarter and took the lead when
Josh Fleming passed 9 yards to Malcolm Smith. Fleming kicked the extra
point to make it 7-6. Gosnell went back ahead 12-7 on a 4-yard run from George with 6:45 left
in the half. The lead went back to the Colts with 2:30 remaining in the half, 13-12,
when Fleming passed 14 yards to Marlon Tramble. Rivercrest extended the lead, 20-12, with 3 seconds left before
intermission. A flea-flicker resulted in a 42-yard pass from Tramble to
Danton Jackson. Fleming made the extra point. The Colts extended their lead with 4:58 left in the third quarter.
Jackson scored on a 70-yard sprint and Fleming kicked the score to
27-12. Gosnell cut the lead to 27-20 on a 1-yard quarterback keeper from
Chance Vaughn. George got the two-pointer with 3:55 remaining in the
third. Another trick play saw Rivercrest score on a 30-yard pass from Travis
Talley to Smith. The PAT was busted and Tramble, the holder, found Kenneth
Burton in the end zone for two points, making it 35-20. Gosnell got back to within a touchdown when Jevon Smith ran in from 46
yards out. George got two more points to make it 35-28 with 7:10 left to
play. Jevon Smith led all rushers with 206 yards on 19 carries for Gosnell.
George notched 109 yards on 21 carries. Greene County Tech holds off Rivercrest,
29-20 By David Grim WILSON - Greene County Tech quarterback Jeffery Blake rushed for 209
yards on 23 carries and scored all four of the Eagles' touchdowns in a
29-20 win over the Rivercrest Colts here Friday night. Blake's first touchdown for GCT (2-0) came with 3:07 remaining in the
first quarter. Tyler Williams kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. Rivercrest (0-2) tied the game on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Josh
Fleming to Marlon Tramble with 5:02 left in the half. John Walker kicked
the PAT. Blake gave GCT the lead for good with 18 seconds left before
intermission. He ran in from 3 yards out and Williams kicked the score to
14-7. The Eagles scored again with 3:59 left in the third. Blake sprinted in
from 20 yards away to make it 21-7. Fleming found Tramble again, this time for a 30-yard touchdown, with
1:11 remaining in the third quarter. A missed extra point left the score
21-13. Blake's final touchdown was an 18-yard run with 8:08 left to play. The
extra point was no good and the score was 27-13. Rivercrest threatened to come from behind. Fleming passed 50 yards to
Danton Jackson to pull the Colts to within 7 points, 27-20. The Eagles, with the game seemingly in hand, fumbled the ball away to
the Colts at the Rivercrest 9-yard line with just over three minutes to
play. On the next play, however, Jackson was dropped in the end-zone for
an Eagle safety, setting the final score. Fleming threw for 259 yards and all three of Rivercrest's touchdowns.

Gosnell edges Rivercrest; historic streak
ends By David Grim WILSON - It had been 23 consecutive trips to the playoffs for the Rivercrest Colts. It was the longest active post season streak in the state. It came to an end Friday night, as the Gosnell Pirates held off a Rivercrest rally and beat the Colts 14-13 in a 3AAA conference game. The game was a must-win for both teams to make the playoffs. "We get to go play Prairie Grove and they get to stay home," said Gosnell Coach Brian Sims. "I wouldn't have it any other way!" "This is a rival game. It's a huge win for us, especially on their field. It's been over 20 years since we have won here. Our seniors really stepped up and made this happen." After a scoreless first quarter, Gosnell (5-4-1, 4-3) got on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run from Josh Anderson. The two-point try failed, and the Pirates led 6-0 going into halftime. Rivercrest (4-5, 4-3) got the ball to start the second half and drove to the Gosnell 7-yard line. On 4th and goal from the 7, Charles Harris seemed to score a Colt touchdown. The official on top of the play signaled that Harris had scored. Another official from behind the line of scrimmage overruled the call, and said that Harris had gone down at the 3. "That was a blown call," said Rivercrest Coach Mike Smith. "They blew that call and it cost us the game. You can print that." The Colts held Gosnell deep in its own territory on the following possession. On 4th and 15 from the 24, a bad snap on the punt attempt gave Rivercrest the ball on the Pirate 16. Four plays later, with :12 left in the third quarter, Harris got in the end zone from 8 yards out to tie the score. The Colts took the lead 7-6 after a successful extra point attempt. Gosnell used almost half of the fourth quarter to drive 73 yards in 12 plays and reclaim the lead. Anderson scored on a 28-yard run with 6:31 remaining, and Ryan Humphrey ran in for another two points to make the score 14-13. A short kickoff gave Rivercrest the ball at the 50-yard line. 5 plays later, Danton Jackson scored on a 21-yard sprint to the end zone with 4:32 left to play. The extra point missed by only inches to the right, and the score remained 14-13. Gosnell's final possession sealed the victory. Twice faced with fourth down, the Pirates converted on 4th and 1 from their own 33, and 4th and 3 from their own 46. Anderson's 101 yards on 24 carries led Gosnell's three-man rushing attack. Jackson led the game with 113 yards rushing on 13 carries for the Colts. The loss marks Rivercrest's first sub .500 season since 1980. |

Rivercrest outlasts Marion,
17-6 By David Grim WILSON - The Rivercrest Colts, runners-up in class AAA for the past two seasons, defeated their second class AAAA opponent in a row here Friday night, beating the Marion Patriots, 17-6. "That's what we needed for this young squad," said Rivercrest head coach Mike Smith. "We didn't get to play in the first week. This really builds their confidence. They played inspired football, especially in the fourth quarter." Rivercrest (2-0) scored the only points of the first half on a 28 yard field goal sophomore back-up kicker, John Walker. Walker's kick made the score 3-0 with 2:25 left in the first half. Marion (1-2) got its only points of the game on the opening drive of the second half. The Patriots marched methodically down the filed on a 14 play, 72 yard drive that was capped on a one yard plunge from quarterback Justin Counts. The PAT was broken up, leaving the score 6-3 with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter.
Marcus Arnold (14) runs for a handfull of his 114 yards while Dominique Bettes (27) pursues. Rivercrest won the game, 17-6. Photo courtesy of David Pierce, Osceola Times 9/17/04 The Colts held Marion to three, three and out possessions in the final quarter. Marcus Arnold put Rivercrest ahead to stay with 7:36 left in the game on a six yard touchdown run. Arnold added another touchdown from 14 yards out with 2:04 left to ice the game. "We knew that three point lead wouldn't win the game," said Marion head coach Mark Uhiren. "We did our best to keep them contained, but we missed too many tackles. We did everything we could to hang in there." Arnold finished the game with 114 yards on 32 carries. Darcel Johnson led the Patriot running game with 74 yards on 15 carries. |

31-0 By David Grim WILSON - The 3AAA champion Rivercrest Colts rolled to another shutout victory in the Class AAA Playoffs Friday night, this time over the Ozark Hillbillies, 31-0. "With the competition level rising in the playoffs, it's hard to beleive we could do this two weeks in a row," said Rivercrest Coach Mike Smith. "These guys just come together and focus and play hard each and every week." After a scoreless first quarter, Rivercrest (12-1) got its first touchdown with 7:31 left in the half on a one yard run from Zach Logan. Murphy Smith, a perfect four of four on the night, kicked the score to 7-0. The Colts doubled their lead with 35 ticks left before intermission. Quarterback Andy Winkleman threw a 24 yard strike to Marcus Arnold to make it 14-0. Ozark (8-4) put together its longest drive of the night to start the second half. The Hillbillies started at their own 10 and drove 47 yards in 13 plays to the Colt 43 before being forced to punt. Rivercrest took over on its own 22 and marched 62 yards to the Ozark 16. That's where Smith kicked a 33 yard field goal with 3:03 left in the third quarter to make it 17-0. Logan made the score 24-0 with just :24 left in the third stanza when he ran in his second touchdown from two yards out. Verdell Kimbrough capped the scoring on the second play of the fourth quarter. Kimbrough returned an interception 24 yards with 11:08 left in the game to set the final score. Ozark threatened to score with just over a minute left to play. That's when Arnold grabbed an interception at the three and returned it 97 yards before the play was called back on a cipping penalty. Winkelman finished the night completing five of six passes for 179 yards. Arnold caught three of those five for 81 yards, grabbed two interceptions and tallied 14 tackles. The Colts keep their home field advantage next week as they face the 6AAA champion Central Arkansas Christian Mustangs in the third round. |

Arnold got to score the next Rivercrest points on a seven yard touchdown run with 4:30 left in the third quarter. Chris Foster wrapped up the scoring for the Colts on a one yard touchdown plunge late in the same quarter. "I'm pleased with the outcome," said Rivercrest Coach Mike Smith, "but I don't think we played with a lot of enthusiasm. I wasn't pleased with the way we performed, especially in the first half." Logan led all rushers with 95 yards on only seven carries. Kimbrough added 84 on nine carries. Rivercrest, with home field advantage throughout the playoffs, stays in Wilson next week to face the Ozark Hillbillies, the two-seed from the 1AAA conference. |

Rivercrest uses third quarter to stun Osceola,
28-0 By David Grim WILSON - The Rivercrest Colts (6-1, 4-0) scored 21 points in the third quarter to upend the Osceola Seminoles, 28-0 in 3AAA conference play here Friday night. The scoring didn't begin until the second quarter. Senior running back Verdell Kimbrough scored on a 20 yard touchdown run with 9:06 left before intermission. Murphy Smith, kicking a perfect four of four PAT's on the night, made the score 7-0. Osceola (3-4, 2-2) was set to receive the kickoff to start the second half. The Colts successfully executed an onside kick, and took over at the Seminole 33 yard line. Eight plays later, Zach Logan ran in from five yards out to double the Rivercrest lead. After forcing the Seminoles to go three and out, Rivercrest took over on its own 41 yard line. Marcus Arnold needed only one play to score again for the Colts. Arnold ran 59 yards untouched to the end zone to make it 21-0 with 4:04 left in the third quarter. Rivercrest drove to the Seminole one yard line late in the third quarter before fumbling the ball away to Osceola. Two plays later, the Seminoles dropped the ball and gave it back to the Colts at the Osceola 11. Logan used the next play to score from there, running in an 11 yard score with :33 left in the quarter to set the final score. "We did in the second half what we should have done in the first half," said Rivercrest coach Mike Smith. "We had people open all over the field. We just couldn't get the ball to them. We started executing our offense much better in the second half. We just couldn't execute in the first half." Osceola running back Chris James led all rushers with 86 yards on 21 carries. Arnold led the Colts' ground game with 79 yards on only four carries. |
