EPC upends Salem; secures top seed from
3AA By David Grim LEPANTO - The East Poinsett County Warriors held on to their #1 seed in the playoffs, and knocked the Salem Greyhounds out of post season contention in the process. The Warriors won the 3AA game 39-0 Thursday night at Steve Tyler Field. Ked Madden scored three touchdowns, two on a pair of 52-yard punt returns and pulled down three interceptions. EPC (7-2, 6-1) scored all of its points in the first half. "They haven't been kicking to me this year," said Madden. "They usually kick it away from me. I'm just trying to be like my boy, (Marcus) Monk." Madden got his first touchdown with 8:55 left in the opening quarter on a 20-yard catch from Brett Hardin. Lando Bass kicked the extra point to make the score 7-0. Hardin's arm put the following points on the board for EPC, this time on a 37-yard pass to Keun Joplin. Bass kicked the score to 14-0. Hardin found Joplin again on the next touchdown and made the score 20-0 on a 4-yard pass with 1:59 left in the first quarter. Madden got his first of two 52-yard punt return touchdowns as time expired in the first quarter. The scoreboard read 26-0 as the second quarter began. EPC scored on its first play of the second quarter with Madden's second 52-yard punt return. Bass' extra point made it 33-0. The Warriors got their last touchdown with 7:16 remaining in the half. Chris Davis scored on an 11-yard run to set the final score. "We executed well," said EPC Coach Mark Courtney. "That's probably about as good as we have executed all year. It all came together for us and this was the right time for it to come together." |

EPC claims 3AA crown, cans Salem,
58-25 By David Grim SALEM - Brandon Sturdivant rushed for 273 yards on 24 carries and four touchdowns, and intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown in East Poinsett County's 58-25 victory over the Salem Greyhounds here Thursday night. The win gave the Warriors (7-0, 6-0) the outright 3AA Conference championship and a #1 seed in the opening round of the Class AA Playoffs next week. Salem (6-3, 4-2) secured the #3 seed. EPC got in the scoring column early on Sturdivant's first touchdown, an 11-yard run, with just over a minute gone from the clock. José Delgado, 7 of 8 on extra points on the night, kicked the score to 7-0. The Warriors doubled their score with 4:09 left in the opening period when receiver Ked Madden sprinted to the end zone from 66 yards away on a reverse.

Photo courtesy of Terry Mullins, Villager Journal 11/04/04 Salem got its first points on a 10-yard run from Mike Innis with 3:30 left in the first quarter. John Arrington's kick cut the lead in half, 14-7. EPC got one more score before the first quarter expired on a 15-yard run from Erik Campbell. Delgado's kick made the score 21-7 with 1:01 showing on the clock. The Greyhounds answered on the second play of the second quarter. Quarterback Chad Willett tossed a 21-yarder to Innis to bring Salem back to within 8 points. EPC blocked the point after try. A Warrior fumble recovery at the Salem 36-yard line sparked a touchdown on the next play. EPC quarterback Spencer Harston found Keun Joplin in the end zone with 9:34 left in the half to extend the lead again, 28-13. Sturdivant got his second touchdown with 1:59 left before intermission on a 64 yard run. Delgado split the uprights again to make it 35-13. Salem scored once more before heading for the locker room. Innis threw a halfback pass 13 yards to Kyle Estes to set the halftime score at 35-19. The Greyhounds pulled to within 10 points, 35-25, on another Willett touchdown pass, this time a 40-yarder to Phillip Taylor with 7:24 left in the third stanza. The two-point try failed. EPC took over from there. After a 31 yard field goal from Delgado in the waining minutes of the third quarter, the Warriors scored 20 unanswered points in the final period to set the final score. Sturdivant scored on fourth quarter runs of 14 yards and 1 yard, and returned an interception 54 yards for EPC's final touchdown. Harston completed 9 of 21 EPC passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. Madden was the recipient of 7 of those passes for 117 yards. Willett completed 9 of 20 passes for Salem, gaining 158 yards and two touchdowns. |
