Pirates barrel their way into playoffs
November 1, 2007

By David Grim

GOSNELL - The Gosnell Pirates needed to win to get into the Class 4A playoffs. They took care of that task and then some, defeating the Trumann Wildcats 41-8 Thursday night in 4A-3 conference action.

Gosnell (5-5, 4-3) made the score 6-0 on a 70-yard interception return from Jevon Smith with 6:30 remaining in the opening quarter.

Quarterback Nathan Wright snuck in from a yard out as the first quarter came to a close. Tyler George ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

George added a 1-yard touchdown with 7:19 remaining in the half to make the score 20-0.

Smith got an offensive touchdown from 3 yards away and made the score 26-0 with 2:48 left in the half.

Wright went to the air with 17 seconds to go in the half on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Hughes. Smith added two points to make the halftime score 34-0.

George finished the Pirates' scoring in the third quarter by running in from 3 yards out and kicking the extra point.

Trumann (2-5, 3-6) averted the shutout in the closing seconds of the game. Quarterback Blaike Jones ran in from 35 yards out and completed a two-point pass to set the final score.

Three Gosnell backs shared the workload on the ground. Clint McHan ran for 80 yards on 7 carries. George tallied 77 yards on 12 carries, while Smith added 76 yards on 7 carries.

Gravette explodes in second half, upsets Trumann
November 11, 2005

By David Grim

TRUMANN - The Gravette Lions scored all of their points in the second half and upset the Trumann Wildcats 18-6 in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs Friday night.

Gravette (7-4, 1AAA 3rd seed) trailed 6-0 at halftime. Perry Heavener ran in from 2 yards out to give Trumann
(6-5, 3AAA 2nd seed) its only points with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter.

The second half was all Gravette. Dusty Duncan scored his first of two touchdowns on a 17-yard run with 6:04 left in the third quarter to tie the score 6-6.

Duncan's second touchdown put Gravette ahead to stay. Duncan scored from 8 yards away to make the score 12-6 on the second play of the final quarter.

Trumann drove to midfield on the ensuing possession, but the Lions stopped the Wildcats on 4th and 2 and took over at the Trumann 49.

The Lions iced the game with 2:58 remaining. Cody Alexander passed 11 yards to Seth Mayoral to set the final score.

"I didn't  tell them anything at halftime," said Gravette Coach Wendell Robinson. "We were down 6 points and we fumbled the ball three times. That's enough said right there."

Robinson, in his first year at Gravette, coached 41 seasons in Texas before taking the Lions' reins. He put the win in perspective for the program. "This is only the third playoff win in Gravette's history," said Robinson. "This is very significant. These kids put it all on the line. They didn't get down and they took the momentum."

"Our quarterback, Justin Elliot didn't practice all week," said Trumann Coach Ricky Timbs. "He separated his shoulder last week against Osceola. The doctor cleared him to play, but he wasn't able to throw or run like he normally does. He's a big part of our offense, and that hurt us."

Duncan finished the game with 120 yards on 16 carries for the Lions.

Gravette travels to Clinton in round 2.

EPC runs past Trumann
November 2, 2002

By David Grim
NEARsports.com

TRUMANN — The East Poinsett County Warriors had to do something they normally don’t do to beat Trumann.

Normally a passing team, the Warriors actually gained more yardage on the ground Friday night. The adjustment worked as EPC beat the Wildcats 27-7 in a 3AAA conference game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Trumann (5-4, 3-3 3AAA) put the first points on the board with 7:18 left in the half. Clint Trigg scored on a 1-yard run and Revis Kemper hit the PAT to make it 7-0.

EPC (6-3, 4-2 3AAA) scored on the ensuing kickoff when Marcus Monk ran 89 yards for the score. The two-point try failed and Trumann still led, 7-6.

The Warriors scored again with just 1:32 left in the half when Brandon Fortenberry ran in a 9-yard quarterback keeper. Fortenberry’s two-point pass to P.J. Lacy set EPC’s 14-7 halftime lead.

EPC played clock-control football in the second half, keeping the ball almost the entire third quarter and scoring with 2:15 on the clock. Marc Smith scored on a 2-yard run to make it 20-7.

The Warriors’ final touchdown came early in the fourth quarter when Jeohn Johnson scored from a yard out. Smith kicked the PAT to set the final score.

“They did a tremendous job preparing for our passing game,” said EPC coach Mark Courtney. “We normally have 15 or 20 completions a game.”

The Warriors gained 125 yards on the ground and only 115 in the air. Monk led all receivers with 72 yards and six catches. “He’s Super Monk,” said Courtney. “If anything comes close to him, he’ll catch it.”

“They are a tough team to stop,” said Trumann coach Ricky Timbs. “They have good receivers and great quickness.”

Trumann travels to Osceola (3-6, 3-3) next week to try and secure a playoff spot. The winner will claim the conference’s fourth and final playoff slot. “We have our work cut out for us,” said Timbs.

East Poinsett County has clinched a playoff berth and will host Piggott (0-9, 0-6) in its final regular season game. The Warriors will be the third-place team out of 3AAA

Gosnell rips Trumann
October 19, 2002

By David Grim

TRUMANN — Two Gosnell backs rushed for over 100 yards as the undefeated Pirates upended the Trumann Wildcats 33-7 Friday night.

Marcus Anderson gained 177 yards on 14 carries, and David Blount ran for 113 yards on 10 attempts. Anderson scored two touchdowns en route to the victory.

Gosnell (7-0, 4-0 3AAA) scored 20 points in the last four minutes of the first quarter. Anderson scored first for the Pirates on a 13-yard run with 3:49 on the clock.

Pirate quarterback Adam Rapert found Anthony Davis from 33 yards away for the second touchdown with 2:12 left in the period.

Blount saw the end zone on a 79-yard scamper with just 16 seconds left in the opening quarter. Neither team would score again in the half, setting the halftime score at 20-0.

Scoring resumed for the Pirates in the third quarter when Robert Thomas and Anderson both ran for touchdowns. Anderson’s run was from 66 yards out.

With 1:57 left in the game and the score 33-0, Trumann (4-3, 2-2 3AAA) got on the board with a 6-yard run from Adam Sloan to set the final score.

“If we win out,” Gosnell coach Freddy Bowen told his players after the game, “all this hair is coming off.”

“I very proud of our defense,” Bowen said. “I think our first-team ‘D’ is one of the better units in the state.”

“We’ve struggled offensively the last two or three games,” said Trumann coach Ricky Timbs. “We’ve got to get back on track if we want to make the playoffs.”

“We still have a legitimate shot at the playoffs,” continued Timbs. “We were in this same situation last year when we made it in and won the first round.”

Gosnell takes its unblemished record to Harrisburg next Friday night. Trumann will travel to Piggott.
