ASU’s Arauco Named to Lou Groza
Award Watch List
Arkansas
State senior kicker Josh Arauco has been named to the 2009 Lou Groza Award
Watch List, announced Wednesday by the Palm Beach County Sports
Commission.
Arauco, a 2008 finalist for the award, is one of 30 players that
have been named to the watch list for the top place kicker in college
football’s FBS
division.
Arauco holds the Arkansas State career record for field goals made
(44) and also has the second most points by kicking (215), third most points
scored (215) and third most extra points made (87) in school history. He
enters his senior season with the third most career field goals in the
nation among active players and needs just seven more to become the Sun Belt
Conference's all-time leader.
The
Grand Prairie,
Texas native is a preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection and was tabbed
preseason All-America by NationalChamps.net. He has been named preseason
All-Sun Belt by Sporting News, Lindy’s, Athlon’s, Phil Steele’s and
CBSSports.com as well.
Arauco was a four-time Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of
the Week last season, making 17-of-20 field goals that included a
school-record 15 in a row.
More than three hundred media representatives, coaches, past
recipients, conference and university officials make up the voting panel
which selects the recipient of the Lou Groza Collegiate Place Kicking Award.
The Award will be presented on
Dec. 10, 2009,
as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards program. The three
finalists will be honored at the 18th annual Lou Groza Award Banquet to be
held at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday Dec. 8.

The Williams
Baptist College men’s basketball team has received a commitment from Alan
Williams of Paragould, Ark. Williams, a graduate of Crowley’s Ridge Academy
and Crowley’s Ridge College, signed with WBC Thursday.
Williams is a 6'1" point guard. He played for two years at CRC,
where he averaged eight points per game and led the team in both assists and
free throw percentage his sophomore year.
In high school, he was a two-time pick for all-conference,
all-region and the All-Greene County Team. In 2007, he was selected regional
MVP, and he played in the Jonesboro Sun Classic All Star Game.
He is the son of Al and Lana Williams of Paragould. He
is the grandson of Jerry and Joyce Sullins of Bono, Ark., and Lavada Wilson
of Highland, Ark.
Taking part in Williams’ signing were his parents, his sister,
Andrea, and WBC head coach Jeff Rider. Williams is a four-year, liberal arts college at Walnut Ridge.
The Eagles compete in the American Midwest Conference of the NAIA.

Chris Miller, Vice President of Media Relations of Nearsports Radio, recently
announced that Nearsports Radio had reached an agreement with the Beebe School
District to form the Badgers Sports Network to air Beebe Badger Sporting
events beginning with this fall's football season. Beebe becomes Nearsports
second 5A affiliate following the recently announced agreement with Greene
County Tech to form the Eagles Sports and Activities Network.
Shane Smith, long time Voice of the Badgers, has joined Nearsports as its
Voice of the Badgers. " We are pleased that long time Voice of the Badgers,
Shane Smith has joined Nearsports and will be the Voice of the Badgers this
season. Shane has broadcast Badgers Sports for the last 9 or 10 years.
Listeners will enjoy Shane's return to the Badgers Broadcast booth after a
year absence from the airwaves," Greg Miller, President of Nearsports Media
recently stated.

— Chris Miller, Vice President of Media Relations with NearSports Radio
recently announced that an agreement had been reached with Paragould American
Legion to broadcast American Legion games in 1A, 2A, 3A this season.
Nearsports Radio first broadcast of Paragould Legion was of Paragould Legion was
opening night of 3A legion action against the West Plains Merchants in a
double header that was played at Francis Bland Park American Legion Field.
Since the opening broadcast, Nearsports has broadcast 3A games from West
Memphis, ASU, and Nettleton. Nearsports first 2A broadcast was cancelled due
to wet field conditions. Nearsports will be broadcasting Paragould Legion

PARAGOULD, Ark. (04/12/09) —

Corporation, recently announced an affiliation partnership with
District 4 Little League for Nearsports to provide broadcasting of District
4 Little League action this season. According to Miller, "Arkansas Little
League District 4 Administrator Jeff Smallmon announced today that the
district has reached an agreement with NEARSPORTS Radio to broadcast Little
League games. These games will help expose a new audience to the great game
of baseball that we all loved as kids. In cooperation with Craighead and
Poinsett County Little League, teams from all over Northeast Arkansas will
be provided an opportunity to play what is going to be called "Spot Light
Friday Night Games" at the newly reopened North Side Baseball complex in
Jonesboro. In the coming weeks the broadcast schedule will be finalized and

(LEBANON, Ill.) - Jessica Shepard of
Williams Baptist College has been named the American Midwest
Conference
Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Shepard takes home the honor
for the period covering Feb. 16-22.
Shepard, a 5'5" freshman
guard from Leachville, Ark., was an offensive force for the Eagles in four
games last week. Shepard averaged 23.8 points per game along with 3.8
rebounds per contest. She was 26-of-55 from the field (47.3 percent), but
was even more accurate from three-point range, hitting 9-of-17 attempts
(52.9 percent) from beyond the arc.
In addition, Shepard was an impressive 34-of-37 (91.9 percent) from the
free throw line, and
has not missed in her last 31 attempts from the charity stripe. She scored
20 points or more in each of the last three games of the week for Williams.
Shepard started the run with 27 points in an 82-75 victory at
Harris-Stowe State University. She followed that with 28 points in a
72-61, come-from-behind win at home against
McKendree University, then registered 21 points in a close 64-61 home
loss to No. 14-ranked
Columbia College.
Along with her stout scoring numbers, Shepard had 10 assists and seven
steals. So far in 2008-09, Shepard is averaging 15.8 points per game, which
ranks fourth among all AMC players. She made just under 81 percent of her
free throw attempts on the year, and also leads the team with 97 assists and
40 steals. The Williams Baptist College Lady Eagles are 13-14 overall and
6-8 in the AMC.
Shepard is a graduate of
Buffalo Island Central High School. She is the daughter of Patrick
Shepard and Sherrie Shepard, both of Leachville. |

COUGAR
SPORTS RADIO ANNOUNCED
The
formation of the Rector Cougar Sports Radio was recently announced. The new
site will broadcast most of Rector High Schools Sporting events as well as
other school activities. Cougar Sports Radio, an affiliate of Nearsports
Media Corporation and Nearsports Radio has broadcasted Cougar Sports from
7th grade to Sr High this season. Cole Thomas is the Voice of the Cougars.

The new radio
venture will stream its sports feeds over Nearsports Radio. Listeners can go

BATESVILLE,
Ark. -
Lyon College
Scots Head Coach Kirk Kelley picked up his
498th and 499th career victories as his team recorded a twinbill sweep,
16-5 and 10-0, of Hillsdale Baptist College Saturday in nonconference
baseball play at Scots Field.
The doubleheader sweep
allowed Lyon (4-1) to win its second and third
straight and completed a three-game sweep of Hillsdale. Lyon outscored the
visitors from Moore, Okla., 48-7, in the three-game set. Kelley and the
Scots return to the diamond on Feb. 13th for a doubleheader with
Indiana Wesleyan at Scots Field. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
Scots centerfielder Nick
D'Amico and
third baseman Evan Segler had a huge
afternoons to power their team's 26-hit performance in the doubleheader.
D'Amico was a perfect 6 for 6 in the two games with eight RBIs, including
a grand-slam in game one. D'Amico leads the team with 11 hits this year.
Segler finished the twinbill 6 for 7 with two homers, a double and four
RBIs. Segler leads the Scots with three home runs this season.
Lyon starter Craig Page
(1-1) picked up the win in game one, but it was
Nick Salahub (1-0), who starred in game two with a five-inning shutout.
Salahub allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out five in five
complete for his first win of the season.
Along with D'Amico and
Segler's three-hit outbursts in both ends of the
doubleheader, three other players had multi-hit games for the Scots. Gary
Richards and Michael Armenteros each had two hit in the first game, while
teammate Jay Husband earned two hits in the second.

Arkansas State Head
Coach John Brady Releases Statement Regarding McKinney Situation
JONESBORO,
Ark. (01/23/09) — Following Arkansas State men's basketball game at Middle
Tennessee Jan. 22 Red Wolves head coach John Brady has released the
following statement:
"Eric
McKinney will be suspended indefinitely for unacceptable conduct as a member
of the ASU basketball team. His discipline will be handled within the team
and a plan will be in place for him to get back in good standing based on
certain criteria set for him to meet. How quickly that happens will be up to
him. Eric realizes he has made some poor choices and the discipline we have
in place for him will hopefully teach him a lesson and make him a better
person as well."
Junior
forward Eric McKinney responded saying "I am sorry for my actions and take
responsibility for them. I apologize to my teammates, coaches and ASU fans.
I look forward to meeting the discipline requirements placed on me and will
work hard to get back in good standing with the team."
Coach Brady
nor the ASU men's basketball team will have any further comment on this
situation.
